serendipity shaving

I have been getting DFS of late but the last few days have really been remarkable. I decided to put in a new blade, I have the type dispenser you slide the blade out. When I opened the razor doors to my surprise I found I got two blades stuck together and had put them both in the razor.
I shaved with the one new blade and got an extremely good shave but I feel it's about a half step behind the shaves I got when I had two blades in the razor.
Should two blades in a DE razor produce a better shave?
Is this how twin bladed razors came into production?

Interesting. I was under the impression that multi blade cartridges use the first blade to pull the hair and the following blades to cut the hair low down below the skin. This is why so many of us had trouble with ingrown hairs when using cartridge razors.
I'm sure someone more knowledgable will be along shortly to say for sure.
