SE Ghetto Style

I picked up a GEM Micromatic on Ebay the other day and had the jackass thought of trying it with hardware store box cutter blades. I haven't done it and probably won't, but has anyone actually done this?

Some have tried it, and come here wondering why their SE shaves are so terrible. They pull at hairs instead of cutting them. Just not sharp enough I guess. They are meant to scrape paint with.

I personally use the GEM by Personna blades from Walgreen's, but since it is your face, you are free to shave it with what ever you want. Pairing an aggressive razor with a sub-standard blade could be disaster. Let us know how it goes!

I have not done it, but you wold be in for a world of hurt. The blades would not be sharp enough, and would also be very rough.

Gem blades designed for shaving are available for very little money from your local Wal-Greens.

Go stepwise.

Start with a known good blade in your new razor and do that for a blade or two then switch to the hardware store blade. It very possibly will work well for you. Or not. But you need to isolate the razor experience from the blade experience.

I have 100 of these awaiting a trial in my Micromatic. I just haven't gotten to it yet.

The only reason I thought of this was because I just finished stripping and caulking all four bathrooms and have about 30 of those box cutter blades left in the 100 pack. If there wasn't a huge difference, I'd almost be tempted (almost).

I like 82R100's suggestion. Get used to the razor first with a "proper" blade. Otherwise, you're likely to sour yourself on it and never give it a decent chance.

I've read other accounts of folks using the utility grade blade in them. Never seen a good review yet. But you could be the first! Just get to know it at it's best before you go "ghetto".

+1

Far better to learn how to use it with a superior blade, rather than have your perceptions of a great razor permanently tainted by a horrible blade.

I'm not at all serious about trying this out, but I did want to know if anyone had tried it. I figure the Micromatic already has a hell of a reputation without my using a box cutter blade in it. It will probably take me a little while to work up the courage to use the Micromatic at all.

Ok, so I have tried it.

The blade was surprisingly smooth. I had a few days of growth and had just acquired the razor recently. When I went at it there was no tugging or pulling. There was also almost no whisker removal. It was weird. And ineffective.

Pointy side goes out.

So it was really so dull that it just slid over your whiskers?

Well now you tell me!

I was so used to DEs that I thought it didn't matter which end was out.

Actually, yes, it just slid over my stubble. I don't even recall any whiskers in the sink after I rinsed the razor.

I used glass scraper blades once I tried it you won't like it I managed with no cuts or missing body parts but it was a rough shave and not a great one got the right proper blade and got a right respectable shave
