Scotch sampling

I went to my local Jensen's supermarket yesterday to get some ribs and tri-tip for smoking today.

I was checking out their selection of scotch and I stumbled upon a glass case with about 60 different alcohols in sample size bottles.

I picked up a bottle of Glenfiddich 12 for about $3.50 and a bottle of Macallan 18 for $10.

I think thats pretty awesome considering the Glenfiddich was my next purchase choice and I got to try it out. It's good, but I dont like it as much as the bottle of Glenlivet 12 i just got at Costco.

they had some Chivas Regal that looked good. I forget exactly which one, but is that Chivas any good?

I have yet to try the Macallan 18, I'm saving it untill right after I stuff myself with smoked tri-tip and pork ribs.

I have always been disappointed by Chivas Regal. Here it is a classic "tax-free" whiskey. Low domestic sales but since they are backed by are large company they have bought a lot of shelf space at the tax-free airport/ferry shops. This way you end up with a crappy bottle of Chivas from a non whiskey drinking friend or relative:mad:

Chivas is standard mediocre blended Scotch. I've got a bottle of 12, that cost me next to nothing (otherwise I wouldn't have bought it). It's pleasant, uncomplicated Scotch. It's what I'll give to guests when they want Scotch, but know nothing about it. It's also something that will blend well and you don't feel bad mixing some soda with it.

What Tim said. Although certainly drinkable, for some reason folks that don't know about scotch assume it's top shelf and I always get at least one bottle for the holidays. I have at least a case of Chivas in my disaster kit in the basement.:001_smile

Thanks for the tip on sample bottles. I never thought to look for the good stuff in those cases. $10 a glass for Macallan 18 is a good deal...

Mmmm... Macallan is my fave - have got to try the 18 yr some day.

You are lucky to live in a state where you can buy liquor at the grocer!!!
