school me on strops

Just ordered a wester bros blade from eBay and have been researching anything and everything about straight razor shaving. Everything I've read so far says to strop first using the linen/canvas part of the strop and then go to the leather part. My question is do all strops come standard with a leather side and a linen/canvas side? Or are the two materials to different pieces? If this is the case will I need to order both a leather strop and a linen/canvas strop? Thanks your time.

It's 2 different pieces. You would get 1 piece of leather and 1 piece of canvas. Not all strops have a piece of canvas. The canvas is not mandatory, it helps maintaining the edge longer but you can live without it. If this is your first strop (I suspect it is), get a cheaper model because you will nick that strop and potentially cut it because you are not used to it. We all do, restrain yourself from buying a super nice (and expensive) strop at first.

Good advice indeed! Start a bit cheaper then upgrade as time and practice allow. My first strop was a good piece of latigo and a fine decision because when I goofed I could sand it out and keep it looking good! Still have that strop and still use it. Not nearly so often now as I have added more expensive strops to my stable, but it still sees service.
