Scale moment

I've got a straight razor coming that needs scales. I'm planning on making them from wood. I've got it in my head that with the scales extended in line with the blade, the razor should balance at the pivot, though all the razors that I have balance on the tang around an inch from the pivot. Is there any science here, or is this relatively unimportant?

You hold the razor buy the tang, mostly, so generally you want the balance point to be about half way down that. But if it was a bit either side I'm sure you would adapt pretty quickly.

Yep

There was a thread a while ago that I could not find where Bill Ellis (I believe) got into it with Seraphim about the balance, it really makes not sense balancing the razor open, you hardly shave with it in this position.

Most of the times the scales are 90 degrees from the blade.

I can tell that if the balance is too far in one direction it can make the razor unwieldy. I made a kamisori style razor once and left way too much meat on the tang. It shaved, but was not a joy to handle.
