What's new

Saw 2 Valet Auto Strops today

I stopped by a small antique shop today and the old gent had 2 Valet Auto Strop razors in the case both were the comb type. I'm totally new with this and asked what he knew about them. All he could tell me was that they took a special blade. He knew nothing about the auto strop title, nor did I. I told him I may be back. He was asking $5 each for them and they looked pretty decent other than they need a little cleaning. Can anyone enlighten me on what these razors are all about?

The VAS sets came with a leather strop that was fed through the razors frame which made it possible to strop the blade while still in the razor. The gears on the frame enabled the blade to flip over so that both sides could be stropped. There are two types of VAS razors, the blade on the early ones simply slid into the holder, the later models have a "gate" that swings open, the blade is placed in it and then the 'gate" is closed. These models used special blades that had cutouts that line up with a couple of pins.

Feather makes a blade that will fit in either type, but at around a $1 each they are kind of expensive. Standard single edge blades can be used in the older ones my removing the spine first from the blade.

Some guys have used the original Valet blades and stropped them with mixed results.
