Saturation vs Shading

Greetings from Mendel!

With regard to fountain pen inks, is there any correlation between saturation and shading?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but saturation refers to the intensity of the color on paper whereas shading refers to the variation of color within the writing; the appearance of shading.

With that being said, is it preferable to have a high or low saturation? I believe that diamine and waterman inks are low saturation.

Is more or less shading preferable or is it characteristic of both the ink and the nib?

or is it a personal preference that varies from person to person. Frankly, if I am writing I want no shading, but if I am drawing it can sometimes be useful.

IMHO saturation refers to the amount of pigment in the ink whilst shading is the amount of color variation from an ink. Is there correlation? Sure, but shading is product of pen and paper just as much as the Ink. As far as if it is desired...up to the individual. For me it depends on the nature of what is written. At work, I am not a fan of shading. At home, I am a fan.
