What's new

RupRazor Paladin

Here are a couple pics, one has the Paladin compared to my Filly. The Paladin has about 6 more inches of usable stropping space, it is absolutely huge. I didn't opt for the 3 inch, 2.5 was plenty big. I would've been happy if Ken had just replaced mine with 2 since I'm used to stropping on the Filly now.

The canvas side feels great and I think it kicks up my edge just a teeny bit over the worn out linen I'd been using off my vintage Illinois strop. The horsehide on this one, whew. It's smooth like butter, just enough draw to let you know it's doing something without impeding the blade at all. Perfect. I like it much better than the glassy slick feel of my vintage horsehide, which I don't think does enough for my edge to deal with my coarse beard.

This is a great product from Ken and his service is excellent. I'm tempted to buy a Toro just to see how it compares.

Have you actually used that Filly? Mine looks like it was run over by a truck. Yours looks new. I don't see any nicks or gouges. I deliberately smeared green oxide from the rough side onto the smooth side of mine. It works well, but looks bad.

I wish mine looked like yours.:biggrin1:

Been using it for a few months now. There's one little teeny divot taken out of the very edge. What can I say, I'm good!

(My vintage Illinois is the one I actually learned on, it's a bit marked up. I bought the Filly because I wanted an inexpensive change of pace, and I do love the thing.)

I've used mine once. Probably looks like yours. Put two large gouges and 2 nicks on it. I SUCK! :censored:

Yeah, mine looks like Freddy Kreuger went berzerk on it

Obviously the OP is a natural when it comes to stropping!

so i am learning more about stroping everyday but have yet to try. but every time i watch the videos, i see people leading with the razor spine and then flipping it on the spine. I don't quite see where the nicks and gouges are coming from. Can someone please clarify?

when a blade is murderously sharp like on a straight, it doesn't take much. the slightest wobble when flipping will cause an ever-so-slight nick. i have a couple dings in my filly where the razor slipped a little in my hand, but nothing too serious. i bought a TM vegan + linen from a member here mostly just for the linen. i like the filly better than the vegan strop.

I don't know man. It's like I spasmed or something while on a downward pass, and the blade went UP all of a sudden. The other two tiny nicks which I can't really see well but I can feel I think I got by sliding the razor leaning too much on its point... like I said, I kinda sucked!

Most of my nicks on the Filly are from stopping at the end of the stropping motion and then flipping on the spine instead of flipping before stopping. Going back even just a little bit will do it.

My Filly works great but looks absolutely horrible. Slight nicks all along the edges near the flipping points and some divots. Also, if water gets on it that's it, you'll have the water stains forever unless you sand them out, I guess. Mine has been splashed a ton since I've got it on the door handle of the back of the door and we also hang our large bath towels on the back of the door as well. Reaching for the towel and bam, water. Or going to the after shave stropping with a bit of water on your hand, or when opening your mouth you accidentally do that spit thing (gleeking).

That Paladin is beautiful, and I really want one. I've been wanting to add a cloth component to my stropping for a while now but I just can't imagine what it would look like after a bit of time with me. I still nick my strop at least once a week it seems.

I wouldn't say I'm a natural, but I'm used to fine motor movements with my hands so I picked up stropping very quickly. I don't believe I've ever nicked a strop from bad technique, but my vintage Illinois does have quite a few marks from when my attention wandered.

How would you compare the feel of the Paladin to the Filly?

I felt like the Filly had more draw right off the bat, but once the nap wore down a bit it was about perfect. The Paladin feels like a broken-in Filly, elevated to perfection.

"Like wiping your *** with silk", but in a good way.

i was worried about this too when i purchased a TM linen component, but i have yet to mar it in any way. it's really quite resilient.
