What's new

Rum's- Whats the deal huh?

So whats the low down on rums I see for aftershave, like Bay Rums and other ones with citrus or lime?

What are they, why do we need then, do they sting and where can I get em?!!!

They are alcohol based aftershave splashes that use rum as the alcohol. Bay rum has bay leaves added for scent. Since they are alcohol splashes, they do burn when you splash them on after a shave. Bay rum is a nice smell.

Pinaud Bay Rum is one of my new favorites, it smells like cinnamon. That's a scent I love. The first few times I wore it, no reaction my from wife either way but I was enjoying it. Yesterday, I had it on in the morning and she came over and said "Why do you have to go work with an office full of women smelling so good?"

Eureka!

(for the record, almost all of the ladies I work with are old enough to be my mother, or grandmother!)

Do yourself a favor and try the Ogallala Bay Rums. You can get them at Bullgoose Shaving or West Coast Shaving.

+1 on Ogallala. Just remember to shake it before applying. If you don't you'll remember the next time, I guarantee. :bayrum2:

Not sure, but international shipping on Bay Rum may be a killer due to the fact that they contain alcohol. I would definitely contact any vendor directly to ask for a shipping quote before ordering.

My favorite Bay Rum is Meehan's, which is a cologne, not an aftershave. A lot of Bay Rums are heavy on the clove and low on the West Indian bay oil, so if you don't like one you try, don't rule them all out. Some of them are basically synthetic fragrances too, which aren't real Bay Rum at all.

Only one correction to that statement. In my understanding they can't actually use rum because of the liquor laws in the US, so they use a Special Denatured alcohol infused with fragrance. This is basically me just parroting what I've seen Sue from SCS say.

Right, don't want any crazies drinking their aftershave now, do you?

Some Bay Rums do in fact contain actual rum. I'm not sure if they do anything to the rum to comply with the law.

From what I understand most bathroom products containing alchol, mouthwash, aftershaves and what not are just regular alcohol with methanol so you can't drink them. Adding the methanol is all thats needed to denature them I think. So it could be actually rum distilled with bay leaves like the traditional way of making it or it could just be grain alcohol with scents added.

I did find a Bay Rum that lists Jamaican rum as an ingredient so I guess it is possible. It doesn't matter though. You don't need it to smell like you are hammered. Ogallala lists only witch hazel, alcohol, and bay rum fragrance oil, and it smells like a fresh bottle of Sailor Jerry or Captain Morgan Spiced. It treats your skin well though!

All the more reason for your wife to be worried about you wearing the Pinaud, it's like the Axe commercials but with Grannies.

All kidding aside, that's the reaction I'm going for.

No, really, it's good stuff, if a bit "Christmas -y"

Oh man I wish we could get that stuff in NZ...mancave where are you?

Anyone here used Wahl Traditional Bay Rum? OR Antons Bay Rum???

Its the only 2 I can find resonably close to home at a relatively small 'electric' shaving shop in Auckland I want to try some. Its cheap enough too, which in my mind, could be good or bad.
