Rooney 1/1, T&H Style I small - what is the difference?

I have my eyes on a Rooney 1/1 because the current 1/2 I have seems too big for me (not that I have too much experience with brushes or wet shaving in general).

I saw that T&H carries a brush that looks like a 1/1, they call it T&H Style I small but publish no specs for it, so I can't really tell if it's a Rooney or just looks like it.

How is a true Rooney 1/1 different from the T&H?

I also so some mention that even a Rooney 1/1 may be different depending on which vendor you buy it from. Is this true and if so why so much selection to confuse the consumer even when a product is called the same thing?

Yes, they appear to be the same thing and have been reported as such here.

The reason for the variance in brushes is that its a hand made, animal product; there will be some variance. However its probably less than you think; there was one vendor selling slightly shorter lofted Rooneys I believe at one time, but no more. There is also some small difference in listing sometimes that aren't reflected in the actual brushes.

It is a topic of frequent discussion here. Truefitt sells rebadged Rooney and vulfix brushes. They are generally regarded as being a good alternative for the cost.

In regards to the Rooney variance, I believe (but could be wrong) it was vintage blades that had a run of short lofted 3/1s, but that was some time ago. As the post above me mentions there will always be a small degree of variance from brush to brush, simply from the nature of the product.

I posted some input to this a few days ago in that I called T&H and they confirmed with certainty that the whole "Firm" line are Rooneys and the style 1 is indeed style 1 that you would see at VB and the Classic is a style 3 that you would see at VB. In other words, yes the style 1 small is what we around here call a 1/1 and the Classic small is a 3/1. I got a Classic medium last week and it is without a doubt a 3/2. Your statement about the T&H branded Rooneys being a "good" alternative is a little soft. I paid $87.20 shipped for my 3/2 at T&H vs about $110 everywhere else. Sounds like a great alternative unless you need your brush to say "Rooney" on the side. I would purchase with confidence if you want the best price.

That's probably why a lot of people buy these two styles from other than T&H I would guess. I've just never been one to drop name brands between me and the guy in the mirror every morning. :001_rolle Now, if they would only brand a 3/1 Finest with T&H on the side I'd be a very happy camper :thumbup1:

A vendor I have been in contact with has confirmed the only difference between the two is one has T&H on it.
