What's new

Rive Gauche

Hi,

Have seen several positive comments on here about the YSL pour homme fragrance.
Can also see some good prices on the 125ml navy/white tubs shaped bottle so was contemplating buying or at least sampling.

Is is the same as the Heritage version? Which I have seen elsewhere at almost double the price.

Rive Gauche in Navy Blue 125ml tins is the women's version, with the men's version in Black/silver - like this.

The new version in the squat square bottles is essentially just repackaged at a higher price, but the 125ml tins are still readily available - I'd say get one while you can.

Thanks, yes that's the one I meant, also "tubs" should read "tubes....shaped bottle". Have seen some at a fair price so will get one!

Rive Gauche in the black/silver canister (I think it was made to look like a can of shaving cream for a reason) for men can be found in the 125 oz. variety for around $40 or less at many discount fragrance websites. I just got this one last week and I would recommend it for someone who enjoys the nice clean scent you get from a typical can of Gillette, Edge or Barbasol shaving cream. I enjoy it. It's very pleasant and will not offend anyone unless you douse yourself in it. I haven't had it very long and have only had one full wearing so far, so I'm not exactly sure yet where it will fit into my wardrobe.... but I think it's a very versitle scent. Good for the office or just doing yardwork on a Saturday afternoon at home. I blind bought it and so far I don't regret it.

Thanks Ben. I could see the women's version - I didn't realise until recently there was a mens - and images I guess couldn't clear up my navy/white suggestion
opposed to what it actually is black/silver.

Cheers for the review also.

No problem. I believe Rive Gauche, a long time ago, only came in a women's version.

The new square bottle looks pretty awesome IMO, but there has been some controversy at Basenotes as to whether the juice has been tampered with. The general consensus is that it is weaker. If you dig RG, you'd probably do well to seek out the older packaging vs the new.

Rive Gauche is one that's been on my want list for a while. Ive come very close to ordering it a few times. As someone above mentioned, around $40 for 125ml. Cant really beat that for something with this good of reviews. I cant help but feel like this would be more of a summer time scent though. If I'm wrong on that please let me know and I can add this list of ones to get for winter. I cant thing of anything else off hand that has a "barber shop" or "shaving cream" smell to it. Is it similar at all to Prada Amber Pour Homme or Infusion d Homme? I know those are soapy but I cant think of anything else to try and compare it to.

The Prada fragrances intrigue me a bit. I finished watching a few reviews on them last night. The consensus seems to be "very high class soap" feel to both Amber PH and Infusion d Homme. Mugler cologne caught my eye at first as a comparable one to RG.... another "soapy" scent.... but from the reviews I saw, the Prada fragrances seem to edge out the Mugler cologne. Prada is offered in many different varieties and bottle sizes.... seems to be alot of options with those.

Rive Gauche can be worn anytime, including the winter. It is by no means a summers only fragrance. Prada Amber PH is one of my other favorites. I am not very fond of Prada Infusion though. Muller Cologne is a different kind of soapy than the Prada frags.

I have been wondering about this, because several of their frags come in these new bottles at a much higher price.

I haven't compared the RG, but I have compared the old and repackaged M7. If there's a difference, it's beyond the powers of my nose, but one thing is for sure - the repackaged version is not better, but it is a lot more expensive. I shan't be paying the new gouging prices - my old bottle of M7 will be my last, and when the old RG bottles are all gone I'll be switching full time to Azzaro.

If you're in the UK, I'd be happy to send you sample from my bottle - send me a PM with an address if you're interested.

Thanks for the kind offer mate - I am fairly sure there is a stockist close to me that might have it, they sell a vast range. I will pop in tomorrow and check, but noted and very grateful. Will let you know either way tomorrow.

Update.
Had a couple of sprays of the newer bottled version at a department store, really liked it, very powerful scent but extremely pleasant. Will definitely be
ordering one of the old style bottles, or maybe two given the cheaper price. Will do that later today. Strange thing is I have never owned Rive Gauche before but
it seemed familiar somehow.
