Restoring/Altering a vintage razor

I've been looking for a Red Tip Gillette Super Speed for some time. I think it just might end my search for the holy grail of shavedom... That one perfect razor that will answer all my questions.
Most all red Tip Super Speeds have some of the red paint nicked off the flare tip. I like my equipment in about as nice condition as possible.
I see some vendors have touched up the red tips with matching paint. I understand that cleaning and polishing is all well and good, but it seems as though touching up the paint would take the razor out of the "original' category, but could approve the appearance quite a bit.
I'd like to hear the pro's and con's of buying a razor with touched up paint, or buying one that needs a touch-up and undertaking it oneself??

You've pretty much hit upon it in your post.

Once you re-paint the area, the razor is "altered." If you plan on keeping the razor as a user and you just want it to look nice, then it's "no harm, no foul." However, if you want to re-sell the razor, there may be some buyers who would be turned away by the re-painting.

To my way of thinking, a Red Tip is not some super-rare razor that commands hundreds of dollars; therefore, I would feel fine about buying one that had been re-painted, or about buying one and re-painting it myself.

To me this issue is no different than someone restoring a vintage auto. A vehicle once in drab condition restored to its former glory to be enjoyed by a new owner. I would buy a well "restored" razor with no hesitation.

I agree as well . . . nothing wrong with bringing a unit back to its former glory!

I would have a major problem, however, with someone selling a repainted Red Tip and not disclosing it to the buyer - that is downright "not right!"
