Aside from looks, what are the differences between replates in nickel, chrome, gold, and rhodium? Do different ones really last that much longer or wear better (or tarnish less)?

My last replate job was strictly to make all parts look a like - the parts were stainless with a lot of difference in color.

Thanks for the link! My read of that is that chrome, nickel, and rhodium are good options (and nickel is the traditional option) but gold is too soft and discolors with age. Dagnabit, I liked the idea of gold and rose gold!
Any razor you get replated in gold (from a quality vendor) will almost certainly outlast you. If you care for your gear like the average (read fanatical) B&B'er, it will likely outlast your children.

thats a hell of a job,to me that looks like a unused razor, you would never know that was a replate.Guilty on all charges!

That's the mark of a true artisan - Dave at www.restoredrazors.com doesn't grind the soul out of the vintage razors.
Rhodium is one of the hardest metals used to replate razors. Nickel is hard just not as hard as Rhodium.
