Red dot v. Standard Fatboy

After seeing the premium prices that red dots go for, I am curious if the shave they offer is any different than a standard fatboy. Clearly the red dot is fare rarer, but is the dot the only difference? What say ye?

The adjustment mechanism is different from the standard Fatboy's. The Red Dot's guard bars actually raise and lower as you adjust it, where in the standard Fatboy it's the blade and door assembly that adjust up and down. The shave is basically the same, though. The premium comes entirely from their rarity.

A FatBoy weighs about 80g while the Red Dot is a touch over 85g. They both fall in the magical 70 - 100g sweet zone for a solid razor. I have shaved with both but do not have a preference. For uncased examples in like condition you could expect to pay $100 more for the Red Dot or $20 per gram for the extra 5 grams.... :) To me the price is all about collectablity and not the shave. In my mind they are grossly under valued for a collectable........YMMV

I wasn't aware of the other differences. I picked up a red dot in case cheaply on eBay quite by chance. The one thing not shown on the seller's pics was the dot. I was surprised to find when it arrive that it was the rarer model. I guess the seller didn't know the significance. One more pic could have got him $$$$ more.

I can not believe I'm beating Alex at this, "We will need to see some photos of your cased Red Dot score"
or as they say, "It did not happen"......

thanks cwnidog
don't I look a fool ( nothing new there, not first time, won't be the last)
So I didn't hit the jackpot, but I learned something (which is part of the reason I come here) and I still have a nice FB which is what I bought in the first place,
All in all I've come out ahead I think.

No, you don't look a fool. It's happened to all of us in the past and will probably happen again. You win some, you lose some, but at least you're playing.

As you noted, you're learning - and you still got a damned good razor, so you're right, you came out ahead.

+1 You got a great razor at a fair price. Congrats.
