What's new

recommend me a new brush

hey guys

I am looking for a new great brush to buy, I have only one brush which is Omega Pro 49 boar bristle brush and I would like to get a new brush with great performance but not sure what to get?

I have been looking at the Semogue brushes like 620 but not sure maybe I should go with a Badger?

I don't want anything really expensive something with great value preferable under $60

thanks guys

Ok....we need some information...first.

Just the basic facts....

Face or bowl lather? Like scritch or soft?

In the absence of the above you could get away with a GREAT brush from TGN - !

If you want another Boar and enjoy the 49, I'd go with a Semogue 1305 or a Semogue Owners Club. If you're looking Badger then I'd say a Simpsons Case, Colonel, Commodore X1, Special, or Berkley or buy one from one of the Vendors with a TGN knot in it or from the BST.

+2 For boar, you can't go wrong with pretty much any brush out of the Semogue line.

I'd wait a while for the new B&B Essential brushes to come out....
Or if it's a badger you want, can't really beat a Simpson Colonel for the price

You can get a SOC Boar from Vintage Scent for under $30 shipped, then buy a nice Soap or Cream to go along with it. The whole SOC line is wonderful. I have to force myself to reach for anything other than those 2 every morning

I use Bowl lather, I would like soft and I use both creams and soaps

Ok - IMHO the 620 you mentioned is more suited to face and soap rather than cream and bowl. I've only used it for face lathering soap so you've got a sample size of 1.

In the pic above you can see an EJ BBB, TGN Finest, Chubby 1, 620, SR 3824 and a non-name boar so you can compare a relatively common all-purpose badger (EJ BBB), a custom TGN knot and the 620 - the Chubby and SR are double your budget therefore N/A. For your budget I'd suggest what the guys above have said about a longer loft Semogue; the 1305 boar gets a LOT of love (Marco has one, is that endorsement enough...?!) and from what i've read face/bowl lathers equally well. The SOC brushes also get a lot of praise too. If you want to build yourself a decent badger from The Golden Nib you could select a 24mm silvertip knot (19.95), a nice 24mm ivory handle for the same price and the 9.95 assembly price and come out under $60 for an assembled silvertip that will be soft and luxurious and able to handle creams as well as soaps. Or, just get an EJ BBB; that crazy brush served me really well for soaps and creams for a while but since exclusively face lathering I find it a bit floppy.

Hope this helps a bit. Can anyone else reco some other ideas or options...?

As my friends have properly pointed out above, Semogue makes a very solid boar brush at a very reasonable price. Many models to take in consideration, all excellent performers.

I love every Semogue I have tried. My favorite has to be the SOC. I just got a second one as a backup.
Another option is to get a vintage handle from the bay and slap a TGN finest knot in it. This could very easily be done for well under $60.

I love my two Semogues. .. 1305 and Limited Edition Italian Barber Model. I found the Semogue SOC handle to be too heavy,

thanks guys for the suggestions SOC sounds great!

also I was thinking about Simpsons Berkeley Best Badger brush...what do you guys think of that brush?
