What's new

Ready to upgrade. Which razor for me?

I've been using a Merkur Classic for a couple of years. I can only use Feather blades as I have really rough hair.

The Merkur is good, except it seems tough to get the blade perfectly centered. So each side seems to give a different shave. I have also broke the Classic easily.

What would be the best razor to get to go with Feather blades, to give a smooth shave? One that easily centers the blade and is good for rough hair?

I only shave down too. I can't shave up.

Thanks!

Well, there are many razors and it really depends on you. However, if you have coarse hair, an open-comb razor such as the vintage Gillettes would be good to try.
The Webers are also great and they are all stainless steel. The Merkur Progress is great adjustable. Wow, too many to list, but i would consider those. Good luck.

Thanks. Are there any open-comb razors that are twist to open/butterfly? Since it's hard to center the blades sometimes, at least on the Merkur. It seems like twist to open would center the blade perfectly, but I have not tried one.

Get a user grade gillette NEW and see how that treats you. I would go OC if you are only doing one pass.

For open comb TTO you can't beat the Sheraton / Senator even a user grade shave great!! Finding one for decent price is a problem since a lot shavers want one.

You could look at the open comb Gillette New 3 piece razors...short comb or long comb might work , they are cheap and easy to find...worth a try for sure.

A slant doesn't help the guy who complains that its hard to load the blade properly in a Classic. It's HARDER to load the blade In a slant.
I would recommend a Gillette New or a Fatboy. Fatboy is TTO. In either razor the blade loads perfectly every time.

It is hard to load my slant?? I, honestly, hadnt noticed a difference in loading my other DE's..maybe i should pay closer attention...I learn something new in every thread!!

Thanks for all the info!

I just pulled the trigger on a Gillette NEW. I think this is what I was looking for.

It has the indent down the middle to center the blade, and I think I needed an Open-Comb for my rough hair.

I hope it does the job.
