as anyone tried this?, i want to get the Teakwood one but its very pricey. i thought maybe get the new version with the black scales and then maybe put some new ones on there. or anyone one on here that i can pay to do it
I also have an extra RG folder that I was thinking about making into a Japanese straight but wasn't considering making it a fancier folder. The thing that has held me back is that the darn scales, even on the RG, are very nice and tight. That powder blue look is kinda drab but they work and feel swell. I have a DX folder and to tell the truth, the RG is just (almost) as nice in the feel category... maybe not as much of Doc's mojo but very serviceable. If you are on a budget, the RG is a better deal - you could get it and a new set of scales for less than the price of a plain DX. In use, I don't notice any differences to speak of... other than the cool factor.
Having said that, I haven't descaled either version. It looks like it is a simple screw on fastener. I would imagine you would need to make a tool to remove the pin but, other than that, it shouldn't be too bad. Anyone here done it?
I took mine apart more than a few times, and there are several washers that fall out when the screw is removed, and needs some coercing to line up when the screw post when reinserted. Nothing difficult tho. Haven't rescaled one, but it shouldn't be to hard. Life2short rescaled his Hart, which has a similar wedgeless design. If you stray from the original design and use a wedge I don't think you would need the third pin either.
