Re-knot or Not?

This is my grandfathers brush, it is still in excellent condition but I just cant seem to get the Funk out of it and am considering re-knotting it with a silvertip badger. What do you all think or is there a good way to de-funk a boar?

Buy tabac. Lather tabac. Repeat until brush smells like tabac. Any other extremely potent scented soap works too.

I wouldn't reknot it. The knot on that brush looks as good as the handle. Possibly one of the best boar vintage knots I've seen to be honest (I've owned dozens if not hundreds).

Restore that puppy. But then again, you're asking a guy who likes to restore so I might be a little biased haha.

If you like the face feel now then keep it as is. It not, you can always change it. You just cant change it back.

Honestly, it looks like the knot itself is in really good shape. Vinegar water and dish soap gets rid of the majority of the funk and rinse it really good. Make a few good test lathers and it should be about good to go.

vinegar my good man. I like apple cider vinegar. or white. let it soak then do a lather with bar of soap, then shampoo then conditioner. that or tomato sauce.

I wouldn't re-knot the brush because of the family history. The knot looks like it is in excellent condition and perhaps just needs some use. Did your grandfather use this brush a lot or was it a newer addition to his shaving routine? Enjoy it knowing that your are holding a bit of your family history in your hand.

Doug

Since its a Family Heirloom, I agree with those that say leave it the way it is.

Even if it were NOT from your grandfather's den, the original knot still looks pretty good ... give it a chance to show you what it can do.

Too many vintage brushes are automatically pegged for restoration when there's no need for it.

This is a older brush. He just used it lightly so to speak. His lathering technique was get it wet get some soap and apply enough to make his face covered the off with shaving usually only one pass and done

My 2 cents.....It depends. If you want to use it and the knot is good, then just defunk it. If you want to use it and the knot is bad, restore it. I'd be on the side of it's a brush with some sentimental value, but really, its a brush, not an heirloom.
