I won't laugh but please don't use the floor wax. Thats some messy,sticky ,nasty stuff. You will wish you hadn't. Simple mineral oil will also add some pop for you and won't harm anything.

Thanks - yeah, ren wax is something I should have here so I'll see if I can locate it.
No worries - just smelling the open can of butcher's wax put me off that idea....
Here's anothe makeshift idea that might make you laugh - can one apply crox to a wheel to polish - instead of buying green compound?

Yes absolutely. Make a paste and put it on there or find something sticky like an ultra light coat of adhesive and flour the wheel with it.
