What's new

Ralf Aust 7/8

I just received a new Ralf Aust Solingen 7/8 straight razor today. The razor exudes high quality craftsmanship. The razor is well finished with no visible defects, an etched spine, Solingen logo etched on the blade face, top and bottom jimps, and has good quality acrylic 3 pin scales to boot. The grind is not mentioned in the description but I believe it is half hollow.
Here are some pics to enjoy.

How was it to hone, and more importantly, have you shaved with it yet?

:blushing:

The honing was a breeze. The bevel was nice and straight with no distortion so it took a very nice edge I believe. The proof will be later tonight when I shave with her.

Scott... You dog!!!!! :001_tt2:

I didn't realize you ordered already! How long did it take, start to finish?

Now I'm salivating!!

Really nice to see Ralf Aust still around and (assuming) doing well. I remember seeing mixed reviews in the past few years about this manufacturer. Looks like a bit of experience has really gone a long way in the overall fit and finish judging by the pictures.

Sure looks like a beauty. The shape of the razor and grind reminds me of a Revisor I once had.

I got this one from StraightRazorDesigns Bill. I would not have ordered direct without making sure you were good first. I was about to order from Ralf Aust direct when I looked at the ones on SRD and they had just added the 7/8. I don't know how many they received but there was only this one available when I ordered.SRD also mailed it in a weatherproof pouch with the receipt inside as well.

I was surprised by the heft of the razor. It has a nice weight to it.

I'm happy to read the rave reviews. This was a brand I never heard of before the Dovos and Bokers became so scarce in the past year. I might try one as my next razor. My first impression from pictures is that it kind of reminds me of a Filarmonica and those are top notch IMO.

The steel is very nice in this razor. It really takes a good edge easily and the shave is good as you could ask for. I just finished my first shave with it and I like the steel better than your average Solingen so he is doing something right.

I had not heard of this brand before, but that's one of the best looking modern production German blades I have seen.

Ralf Aust has been a one man operation grinding and finishing razors for a few years now that i know of. He seems to really have honed his skills. I think I will pick up a 6/8 next.

Is this a start to finish operation or does he buy blanks and re-work them? Nice looking razor Scott.
