RAD - versus- Collecting

is RAD and Collecting the same? I think RAD can be the genesis of collecting. I am starting to collect. I am becoming far less haphazard about my purchases. I am no longer reflexively buying every Super Speed I see. I will buy crappy, non-appropriate razors in nice cases though.

I want to obtain the G series of Schick Eversharps. There is only 8 of them. I don't necessarily want to shave with them, I have other favorites for that.

Hopefully I will never be interested in collecting NOS razor sets or even mint razor sets. Please spare me and my family that! But excellent to good, cased sets? You bet. Items that complete sets? Can't wait! Obtaining a razor to see if it shave better then a Super Speed? meh.

It's just like coin or stamp or zippo or cloth swatches collecting. Collecting is not RAD, it's Collecting.

I'm struggling with this right now.
I've posted in other threads that I'm in a bad case of RAD for Gillette's in cases.
I'm still looking for a nice rocket that goes in the red case.
Today I picked up a super nice British Aristocrat Jr.
it's getting ready for a test run tomorrow.

I think RAD is often the precursor to an appreciable collection. Many people (myself included) purchase razors left and right when they're first introduced to wet shaving, and eventually sell them off on the BST and keep the ones they like best.

I own a razor.

The only one I'd like to try is a Toggle. Maybe it'll replace the Super Adjustable.

Only accessory I use is shave oil. Shave Secret, to be exact.

I have yet to find "my" blades. Been using Wal-Mart blades and just started looking.

RAD? Nah, I'm out.

Collecting is when you are looking for specific razors, like if you want all the variety of Super Speeds or something.

RAD is when you'll buy anything.

I think that's a good observation.

At least IME. Started out wanting to try a bunch of different things. Then got more discriminating (especially after finding a few razors that I like using). Now, new things will get added if they are something I want to add to the collection and not just try out.

Now I want full sets, or razors with their mailers, or something unique (such as a Gillette Officers set).

It's much easier for me , now, to leave that lone Superspeed on a shelf than it was a couple of years ago.

I think the difference is that RAD compels you to find different models
to actually use, while collecting is collecting.

I don't have much interest in a cabinet full of unused razors. But I have gone through quite a few I want to shave with and plan to get a few more. When I narrow down a dozen or so for shaving, I'll sell the rest.

I think that they are different. Alot of people get RAD but then a few people (myself included) decide that RAD for RAD sake isn't the answer and then move onto collecting.

It's gotten to the point, for me, where there are 7 more vintage razors that I want to find. A couple are ones that I'm unlikely to find at my price; my best chance is a thrift shop or something similar. I'm theoretically not buying any more razors right now, but if one of those dropped into my lap at a tempting enough price, I'd take the opportunity.

With me, it's not full sets of a series of razors, or cased sets, it's just individual razors that I like for reasons that make sense to me. There are a lot of those, however. I won't buy a razor that I don't intend to shave with, but after I've shaved with it, it may become a permanent display item.

I've made a tentative decision to wait until around the end of this year, then PIF a couple of duplicate razors, and try to sell a bunch of others, probably on B/S/T. I won't get rid of anything that I have only one of, and I won't try to dump anything that I know is defective on someone else, not even as a PIF (there are two or three of those).

That's when I started to focus more on what I'm buying. I got a lot of RAD purchased stuff that I need to purge back out. I'll keep dups of certain items, but mostly one of a kind will be fine. And improving on that one if and when I can.

Yes, I'm looking at putting a few razors that I have multiples of on BST. I can get a little bit of money for future purchases and I help shave them around.

I will shave with everything I have to at least once with the huge exception being the double ring I just found. Terrified to screw it up.

Same thing happened to me.

I know I have multiple Fatboys and Slims, but if I see one in a shop for $5, I am not going to not buy it. Actually my searches are more refined now.
