What's new

Quitting smoking.

Well I've read a bunch of posts like this so i hope I'm not boring anyone.
I consider myself a heavy smoker. Anything made of tobacco I LOVE to set on fire. Cigars, pipes, cigarettes i smoke it all. Anyhow to make a long story boring, i want to cut out the cigarettes altogether. I'm currently up to about 12 cigarettes a day of roll your own.
Do you guys think i can be an avid cigar and pipe guy and still quit smoking cigarettes?
Any tips or advice would be great.

My understanding is that cigars and pipes give minimal nicotine, etc., since they're not inhaled. Thus, they lack the chemical dependence potential of cigarettes. Also, though not totally without risk (oral and throat cancer), they are much less unhealthy habits than cigarette smoking.

So, yes, it should be doable.

PS: Bravo for your plan to give up cigarettes. Cigarette smoking is pretty much the most unhealthy habit known to man. If you're getting a lot of craving, talk to your MD about a nicotine patch or Zyban.

Of course it's all relative to the individual, but yes, it can be done. I was a cigarette smoker for six years and kicked the habit. Five years later I got into cigars and pipes and do not feel like it will lead me back to cigarettes.

I'd would say if you really want to quit, you will have to give it all up. I tryed all that and it just makes it harder .
As always ymmv

I couldn't do it, but I sure wish you luck. I quit about six or seven years ago, and seldom have an urge to smoke now. When I do they are quite strong. FWIW, I still have a couple hundred cigars in the igloodor being maintained for the day I can 'Just smoke one once in awhile".

As someone who rolls your own cigarettes, you may inhale more pipe and cigar smoke than you realize. I smoked Camel regulars for almost 30 years, and had no trouble inhaling the smoke of an occasional cigar. There was no enjoyment without ingesting some nicotine (that's what the tobacco habit is all about, isn't it?).

I think it would be best to give up everything. Extremely difficult, to be sure, but best in the long run. Tom

On a side note, i am on my 21st day of non smoking after 10 years of one and a half packs a day. YAY. Cold Turkey actually does work if you just have will to do so.

PS: TomC, nice Guitar....Agile AL-3000?

As a former cigarette smoker (19 years off) who smokes a cigar or two a week, I'd suggest quitting everything for a while. The cigars might make the yearning for a cigarette a little too strong. Quitting cigarettes is the big goal here, and the most difficult.

I smoked cigarettes exclusively between ages 14 - 26, then smoked pipes for a few years. Believe me, I learned to inhale the pipe & get my fix just as effectively as when I smoked cigs. I quit for TEN YEARS... then after a nice dinner & drinks one night on a business trip, I "just had one" - and before the night was out, I bought a pack & was at it as if I hadn't quit at all.

Now, years later, I've been quit since 8:30 a.m., October 2, 2008, last cig extinguished at 60 S. Swan St., Albany, NY.

Remember, YMMV... and speaking only from my very own experience: if you can, quit. No cigars, pipes, tiparillos.

If you are ready to quit, you will. And if you're not ready to quit, you won't. You can't.

You either smoke or you don't.

And if you do smoke - enjoy it. What the hell, eh?

:redface:Then again, I'm not a smoker, so I could be totally wrong about being able to quite cigarettes and continue pipes and cigars.

Its very unusual for a guy to smoke cigarettes, cigars and a pipe. Throw the cigarette apparatus away and every other day take a puff or two of a cigar. Stay away from the pipe because its a pain in the neck. After awhile your body will feel great and your lungs will clear up and hopefully no damage.

If this helps my grandfather smoked cigars until his late eights will no physical affect and George Burns smoked several cigars a day until his was 100 and he also drank liquor. I stopped cigarette smoking about 37 years ago and glad I did but still like the smell of a cigar.

Good luck:smile:

Friend, I would consider getting "off" any form of smoking, I am now 7 months clear .. a year ago I was diagnosed with lung cancer, stage 3 blah blah, wasn't supposed to be here now .. but somehow survived.

I'd smoked Marlboros for some 35 years, at the peak 3 packs/day

There's a couple things you can avoid ..

Telling your kids you have a 10% chance of making it to next Christmas

Spending a summer sitting in a chair at a nice cancer center, losing your hair

I have cigars in humidors that I check, but won't touch for a while

I gave up the cigarettes and am able to have the odd cigar....the trick is don't inhale and keep the cigars for special occasions. Each person has to find their own system though....good luck!

Good luck to you. Quitting is most certainly difficult, but think of all the spare cash you'll have for SSAD, RAD, SCAD, SBAD, etc... Hang in there!

Look into snus, ultra low carcinogens (Swedish Doctors don't even consider it a risk based on a comprehensive 30+ year study; the air you breath is worse), plenty of flavors, the right amount of nicotine, lasts awhile w/ no spitting plus more. Shoot me a PM if your interested in this nicotine replacement product. I'll give you all the info I can.

After 14 years of smoking a pack a day of marlboro red i have managed to enjoy cigars on a regular basis, 2-3 cigars a week, it has become a very dear hobby to me...so yes ...it can be done.
good luck!
