Question about Proraso green drying out skin

I'm brand new to DE shaving and the first and only cream I've used is Proraso green (new formula). I shave before bed and the next day I always get itchy around my sideburns down to my jawline. This doesn't usually happen to me at all so I know it is part of my new routine, I'm just trying to figure out which part.

Is this a common issue with Proraso green? Could it just be that my skin is getting used to DE shaving?

I've been using Nivea sensitive skin balm as an aftershave and I've also been putting some moisturizing lotion around that area but it seems to wear off eventually and my skin goes back to being itchy and then red.

Thanks!

It could be the shaving cream or it could be the razor. A new shaving cream (or soap) can cause an itchy feeling due to a skin reaction to that particular product. Unfortunately there's very little to do if a certain ingredient or formula does not agree with you. But it could also be the new razor. DE shaving needs some tips to follow: no pressure on the razor, shaving only WTG and XTG on your first pass and proceeding slowly - all vital. Please keep us updated on your next shaves and welcome aboard. :001_smile

Thanks, You're right about it possibly being a skin reaction rather than dry skin. I do notice my cheeks are red after washing up almost like a rash but it never seems to bother me when I go to bed or another part of my face so that's why I jumped to dryness. I guess this will just give me an excuse to buy another cream :)

Since this one possibly gave me a reaction should I automatically start looking at stuff for sensitive skin or would something like TOBS almond oil be an ok choice?

EDIT: Actually I forgot my T&H sampler pack gets here tomorrow so I'll give the ultimate comfort cream a try and see if that works out.

As Marco said there is not much you can do if a particular product irritates your skin. It's all trial an error so it would be good to try a few different brands of creams and soaps. Sensitive skin versions are not always a guarantee either; for example Real Shaving Co.s sensitive cream lights my face up like a Christmas tree.

I know the old formula does dry my skin a little but I have oily skin so this is a plus for me which is another reason I love it.

I wish I could take a break tonight and wait for the T&H sampler but I got a new brush today that I'm excited to try out so I guess my face will just have to pay the price.

I find Proraso Green to be a very refreshing product that doesn't dry out my face and leaves it feeling great, but we all react differently to any given soap or cream. If this problem persists when you use Proraso you may have to try something else.

I am one of those folks who liked the old scent of Proraso better, but the new formula seems to provide more slickness and moisture, at least for me.

Welcome to B&B. It could be the cream. It could be the technique. Proraso has been known to dry out some people. It also has been known to give some an allergic reaction. Only time and experience will tell if either of those is the case. The switch to DE takes a bit of patience and practice to refine one's technique. Again, only time and experience will tell the tale.

My suggestion would be to try a different product to see if any of the conditions persist. If not, continue to refine your technique. You can always revisit Proaso after you have resolved your condition to verify that it was the cream.

Good luck and keep us posted.

If you find that Proraso reacts negatively with your skin, there are quite a few minty fresh menthol soaps and creams out there for you to try.
