Question about alcohol AS & razorburn...

...I know that I don't really like the burning sensation that alcohol-based AS can provide. As such, I have only used such AS once or twice. I tend to use alcohol free Thayers and/or alcohol free ASB. On days when I get some razorburn, I notice that using the balm, I don't get a sting, but the razorburn lingers for quite some time.

I am wondering if an alcohol-based AS would initially sting more, but eliminated razorburn to the point that it doesn't linger? If I'm looking to kill razorburn ASAP, am I better off using an alcohol-based splash?

When I use an alcohol-based aftershave, it eliminates razor burn after the initial sting goes away. If I'm using Aqua Velva, the burn hangs around a little more (probably because of the menthol).

eventually that menthol gives you the cooling sensation, but I have noticed the same thing. In my experiences, any good ASB (even ones with alcohol) take care of razor burn better than and alcohol splash--my skin just seems to look and feel better. But, the alcohol splashes (Aqua Velva is my favorite) takes care of it faster, but my skin doesn't feel as good. The severity determines which AS product I use, is what I am trying to say.

Hey Keith --

The only way you are going to know for certain is to try out a few different ones for yourself, and decide what you like best. I personally prefer alcohol-based AS most of the time; but I like that initial sting and, more importantly, I find I often get "the sweats" from balms (that is, I get beads of sweat on my upper lip). To get rid of the razor burn, you might want to try some witch hazel immediately after your shave, before applying the AS. I like the T.N. Dickinson's WH -- it is very pure and, although it does have something like 14% alcohol, it gives me no sting at all. I don't know where you are on LI, but you I get it at Harmon Drugs on Merrick Road in Rockville Centre.

Good luck!

As always, it depends heavily upon your own skin, but I personally find that AS splashes work way better than ASBs for my razor burn. I am of the camp that loves the burn, so I may be different than yourself, but I can't argue with the results. I think one of the reasons is that balms tend to leave my face slightly greasier whereas splashes have a slightly more drying effect for me, and I find if my skin is greasy my razor burn tends to get worse or even result in something akin to the occasional small pimple.

Interestingly enough, I grew up in Rockville Centre and lived there the first 28 years of my life...now I'm just up the road in Lynbrook...small world....are you from RVC?

I've had similar results as adon. If I used a balm my razor burn gets worse, but if I use alcohol it gets better. I think the reason is that the alcohol sanitizes the "wounds" on your face, preventing bacteria from growing and causing worsening burn or pimples.

The art of shaving aftershave lotion gives a BAD burn that doesnt seem to go away. I guess I need to get a new one.

Try Weleda's "After Shave Lotion" - smells a bit funky (myrrh overload) but kills razor burn DEAD. Fantastic stuff. The scent burns off very fast, too. Then follow with a moisturizer if you need.
