Putting Together A Shaving Kit

Hi everyone my name is Chadd and I'm happy to be here. I'm quite the beginner as I have a Art of Shaving set that I quite enjoy and I currently use Cade shaving soap. I use art of shaving after shave and pre shave oil. My question is a good friend of mine likes my shaving set a lot and I was thinking of getting him one for Christmas and wanted to know the best way of going about doing it. I don't want to pay the incredible coin I did for mine from Art of Shaving but I also don't want to get him some cheap kit with a bad brush. I wonder if piecing a kit together would be the most cost effective way of doing this or would buying a ready made kit be the best. Anyone that can help I really appreciate it. My only concern is making sure the stand that I buy would fit the razor and brush top of the brush and razor I would get. Thank you very much for all of your help in advance everyone.

Italian Barber offers some nice kits, cheap, and Razorock is top of the line in my opinion.

Whats your budget?

If you want to go quality but as inexpensive as possible here is what I did when I first started.

Edwin Jagger DE89 $26.20 with 5 blades and free 2 day shipping: http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/318155-Edwin-Jagger-DE89-and-Free-2-Day-Shipping-26-20

Tweezerman Brush $9: http://www.amazon.com/Tweezerman-28...d=1354416105&sr=8-1&keywords=tweezerman+brush

Col Conk Chrome stand $16: http://www.amazon.com/Colonel-Conk-...qid=1354416165&sr=1-1&keywords=evernice+stand

The brush and razor fit perfect in the stand. As for a soap bowl I went to WalMart and got a 96 cent stainless bowl. It is in the pets section labeled as a small cat bowl. While you are at WalMart pick up some Van Der Hagen shave soap for $1.50.

Here is a picture of my setup:

+1 I did almost the same thing, except I opted for getting the long handled Merkur Razor.

Thank you very much for the reply guys especially the welcoming. I am trying to stay around the 100 dollar mark on this one. I love the kit you put together DICE. However, what would you recommend in the way of a chrome handled brush? The more I look at safety razors Im thinking of giving my friend my art of shaving fusion head razor and buying a new Merkur or something :). Is that so bad?

Awesome, Thank you this is what I will go with. What is everyones opinion on Merkur Razors? Whats the favorite model? I have heard a lot of good things about the short handled heavy weight versions. I think I quite like longer handled razors though.

As of right now I have that same stand, I have a merkur 23c (long handle) and I quite like it. I'm still trying to fit the perfect blade to it. I also have a parker brush which I paid $40 on amazon. It fits into the stand but you have to unscrew the chrome piece on the end of the handle a bit. Its a bit of a hassle but not bad for the brush at all as it is on a screw. All in all, with what I bought, my total was around a $100. And I splurged on Taylors cream for $15

I would endorse post #3. You could not go wrong with that set up. Forget the chrome handled brush.
The Merkur 34C is, in my view, a better razor than the EJ89. The handle is very secure and the razor gives a great shave.
