I haven't used it for a while, but when I did I used a brush. I'd like to give a tube to a friend who is not yet at the brush stage; will it perform well brushless?

It does work brushless.
It's pretty good. Just make sure he doesn't use too much, and tell him to massage it into his beard for 30 seconds or so.
It does work but I don't feel as saticfied with this method, I like my methodical brush routine
Every cream can be used with or without a brush. Some, of course, work better with a brush.
