I am receiving this razor later this week. I have wet/dry sand paper and 0000 steel wool. From the photo it appears the script are etched into the blade. I want to preserve, yet clean up the metal. Please advise and thank you.
I'm nowhere near anything except a beginner, but I've used 0000 and Flitz on the face of my W&B without any harm visible to me. I was somewhat amazed at how well the combo worked.
This photo is crummy and doesn't show the etchings at all but it shows the shine.
The picture on the green leather is the razor as I received it. It looked worse in person than in the photo.
The bottom photo shows the etching to a degree. It isn't a good photo.
I'd previously hit it with W/D but had avoided the etched areas of the face and under did things on the stamped tang.
If you don't like what you get with very conservative methods (even a cloth and Flitz and some elbow grease) you can always go to a bit more aggressive methods. No reason to start with more than necessary. I suppose with experience this will become easier to know and have a feel for.
I wanted to improve my razor "enough," but not "too much." Before putting too much time into it I wanted to hone it and see how it shaved, so I have done things in stages. Next step is to remove the crummy, split scales and do a bit more tang and blade refinishing before I put new scales (which I'll make myself) on it.
If I get that wedge I plan to leave the patina and focus on the edge. It doesn't have to look good to shave well. I got this idea from another member who posted the razor he was using. I've been wanting to have one that shows it's age.
