Pre-Shave Oil Question

This one is for guys that use a pre-shave oil. I used some Trufitt & Hill ultimate comfort pre-shave oil yesterday that came with their sample pack. I thought it worked very well. I could still feel it on my face after my first pass. Most of the time I use the Proraso pre-shave and it works well also but I don't really feel it on my face after the first pass is complete. I can still feel the cooling effects but don't really feel the slickness of it. Do you guys that use a pre-shave oil find that it clogs up your pores? Or are there brands that you feel do a better job than others? Just curious about it and wanted to hear a little more before I go and buy some. Thanks.

T&H makes a very high quality pre-shave oil and, although expensive, it does work beautifully. Proraso pre-shave cream is cheap and very nice too, especially when used in combo with Proraso shave cream or soap. Someday in the future I'd like to try the new Simpsons pre-shave oil.

I used shave secret last shave. I think it helped a little but could use another go at it. It wasn't anything special it seems, but I'll try it more to make a final decision.

I have some TOBS and AOS preshave oils, i like both of them pretty well. I get longer usage out of the AOS, though many say its too thick. I just use less of it and massage in a little water with it.

I use the Cade preshave and it works very nicely. No apparent clogging of pores, and it seems to work through 2-3 passes.

I have used T&H pre-shave oil for years and now I use my own recipe. I only use a few drops and lately I only apply it before my final ATG pass. I have never had an issue with the pre-shave oil clogging my pores or any adverse consequences.

I use the AoS lemon pre-shave oil. It definitely helps soften my whiskers when I use my R41. I don't find the AoS pre-shave oil clogging my pores at all.

I think natural pre-shave oils are the way to go. I use grapeseed oil and keep it in a cleaned out Frank's Hot sauce bottle. The grapeseed oil is light and won't clog your pores. I put it on prior to lathering and seems to so well. Just saying.. a large bottle of grapeseed oil will only run you about $6-7 dollars and will last forever.

I use shave secret, 3 bucks at wally world, smells pretty good and I think it works better for me than proraso pre. I've got pretty oily skin and I don't have any issues with this clogging pores like I thought it would. Highly recommend.

I grabbed a bottle of Anthony Logistics from Ulta when I started. It is the only one I've used and doesn't seem to do much after the first pass. Since I shave everyday my scruff doesn't get long enough to need it. At $25 per bottle I can't recommend it.

I use Taconic organic pre shave oil. I have not had any issues with clogged pores, zits or other unwanted conditions as a result. You can feel that it is still there even between pass 2 & 3. Most times, it is gone with the final rinse.

I am currently rotating between 3 Pre Shave Products.

Proraso - very nice, easy to apply, works well.
Floid Sandalor - nice bottle to apply, little to not scent, goes on easy
Proraso Pro Lube - fresh minty scent, can clash with other scent from soap/cream, works well.

these 3 work for me. i think when they are finished, the Proraso will be the winner for the container, application method (firmer paste dab with finger) and the mild scent when applied. as nice as the RR Pro is, it's very stongly scented and overpowers the scent of the first pass lather. floids is fantastic and would also be one i would buy again, if it's still around.

i don't notice any razor clogging, but they do seem to help me. the odd time i try to go without one, i usually have a rough 1st pass, which leads to a less then stellar shave.

Yeah, but won't pre-shave oils that stay in your skin contaminate your brush? I read that oils will stick to the brush hair and prevent water absorption. I always like to wash my face before and after my pre-shave conditioner.

I have been using pre-shave oils for more than 10 years. None of my brushes, including one that has been is use for 35 years, have ever been contaminated by pre shave oil. First, you use only a few drops on your face and then apply lather with a brush. Any oil on the brush is washed off when you clean the brush of its lather.

I've been using Trufitt & Hill ultimate comfort pre-shave oil then applying a hot towel over it for a few seconds before lathering. At first i wasn't sure how much it was helping my shaves as it felt as though it was absorbed into my skin, between applying it to my face then some more bowl lathering and applying cream to my face.

So I tried not using the oil a few times and I had a less smooth shave with the same cream, razor and blade.

I was wondering though if different creams with different ingredients will work better than others with the oil. Any one experienced better or worse shaves with different creams when using their same brand of oil?

I used to use pre shave oil years ago when I wa a kid of 19 but it never really worked for me. Now 44 I picked up a 15ml bottle of KOS as it was on offer for £1 instead of the usual £3.98. It's menthol and I found that when used properly it helped to give me a good clean shave with no issues. I did have a real bad shave a few weeks ago with a fatip and torn my face up a little. The oil helped ease the next day shave and helped with the shave it self. While I'm not 100% convinced I have purchased a bigger bottle (60ml) of a more natural oil from an on line vendor. It works out cheaper per ml and this one is a grape seed oil base with pepper mint, lime and tea tree. Funny thing is it smells like the KOS one. So far so good. Nice smooth and clean shaves,no problems with lathers either with soaps or creams. I'm back to shower shaving but this poses no problems with the oil.
