Pre shave oil on second ATG pass?

Hi All,

This is a question for the people who use pre-shave oil.

Do you find it necessary to reapply the oil for the second ATG pass or will one application will be sufficient for 2 passes?

I am using the AOS pre shave which I understand is a thicker oil that I use very sparingly.

Cheers,
S

I'm living in a particularly arid environment and found to my pleasant surprise that between-pass shaving oil apps gives me great shaves (just lengthens the process even more:huh:) No problem with lather degradation.

do you have/how do you avoid the problem of the oil degrading the lather?

I have no problem with the oil degrading the lather at all.

My process is wet face, apply about a dime size of oil, then use a shave stick and face lather.

Repeat again but without using the stick but using the lather on the brush.

interesting. I gave EVOO a go as a preshave oil once, and it slaughtered my lather and gummed up my brush. sounds like ill have to give it another go.

There was a recent thread discussing how preshave oil is intended to soften and prepare the skin for shaving, not for coating the hairs. It seems like a second application wouldn't do much, but YMMV, right?

I used shave oil for about a month and found it degraded the shave creams I was using and made my razor skip spots on my face. Maybe I wasnt doing it right but I finally gave up on it. When I did use it however I applied it before each pass. (Like others have stated, oil also made a mess of my brushes.)

I use the EVOO in small (coin size) amounts. At first I thought the EVOO was helping to lubricate the skin and blade. What it does do in reality is prepare the skin so that it is pliable. With my two pass shaves I use just enough oil to lightly coat my face and that is all.

If I use my oil, I only use it before my shave. I don't just coat my fact with it though. I rub it into the skin and then splash some hot water on it. From what I read, the oil helps your skin absorb water so it's more supple and less likely to get cut from the razor. I have tried shaving without the oil and found that it doesn't seem to help as much as I thought it did. I still use it on occasion though.

Oil, by nature is a water repellant. I can see how it would lubricate, but not absorb water. I've given oil a shot as it was bought for me as a gift & the shave was very nice & comfortable, however, it was building up in my razor & after time i could feel the bristles of my brush were being affected. It wasnt too bad, but I get nit picky about stuff like that. I enjoyed the experience & only used prior to the 1st pass & not again during & the shave, as I said it was quite comfortable.

I always apply a pre-shave treatment (oil or cream) only one time before lathering.
Really don't need to apply it again when making my second pass against the grain.

Open again. Great Thread.

NEVER, EVER with the pre shave oil overdo it. 5 drops only are enough maybe less.

Rub it in wet face vigorously and let it sit about a minute or two.

Wet again a little bit your face again because oil will dry with the rubbing.

Apply lather as usual and proceed.

With these steps no problems with your lather, brushes or clogging razors.
Tried once with Floid Shaving Oil & literally boost up my ATG final pass. For Real. If you want you can use it only for the last pass(ATG) without the need of rubbing it in your skin a long time, because the majority of the stubble will have been already removed.

You thank me later.

There are all kinds of different oils, they don't all behave the same. I make my own, never had a lather issue.
