Practice strop bad slice

I have had my TM + practice for about two months now. Been holding off from the real deal and sticking to the practice. I use the cotton and then both sides of the practice. Getting a nice rhythm going.

Famous last words.

My mind blinked last night and I changed direction half-way down the strop without flipping the blade. :blushing:

Big slice. It goes all the way through on the left edge for a whisker, and the actual slice "flap" extends an inch across the strop. I can feel it when I strop. And it's half-way along.

So amidst some colourful language, I continued stropping on half a strop. It's possible I could continue like this. But...

Is this strop a goner? I could post photos. I can say that this is not a nick I can repair with sanding.

Advice / commiserations / year-long bans please.

Psssst - Tony, can I have another practice please?

you can try gluing down the flap, then sanding it back so its flush - ive heard guys do that and save a strop they thought was finished

Ouch! Well, at least you can tell yourself it wasn't your real TM. Maybe Tony will only give you a six month ban.

If it's a big enough flap, try gluing it down with rubber cement. Then sand with a pumice stone to make it all nice and smooth again

Thanks guys. I glued down the flap with some industrial strength all-purpose glue last night, and the flap locked almost dead flat. Shall pumice this evening, but have already stropped tentatively this morning, with excellent results.

Appreciate the strop-saving tips

Ouch bruno...that sucks man...kinda scary considering how much the real strop costs! Glad you're getting some more mileage out of it after the incident...is the blade okay or did you roll the edge?

So far so good with the edge - a fairly stiff (and short) full hollow, thank goodness. The shave was still pretty smooth.

That's a Glen edge for you.
