What's new

Powerhouse Frag Splurge

Not that I really needed them, but I just ordered some Caron Yatagan (dirt cheap direct from Amazon--$26 for 4.2 ounces) and some YSL Kouros (I know...the dreaded one).

I never actually smelled Kouros that I know of, but I did hear it compared on Basenotes to Balenciaga pour Homme, which I know well from when my Dad wore it. If it is anything like that, I'll love it.

Hopefully now the ADs are dying down...but lately I've been thinking a lot about Pen's Hammam Bouquet for some reason...

Good buys there, TNR. I have both and love both. Go with one spray first for both of them and don't automatically give the Kouros a "no" based on inital impression. That civet smell kicks in fierce but mellows out after 7 or 8 hours. :w00t:

Ok, just kidding. It settles fairly quickly and the base of Kouros is where the money is. They're both great scents and I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

Hamman is great if you can get through the sort odd opening.
But please test lest you be horribly appalled.

If you're looking for "power scents" let me throw Chanel Anteus or Van Clef and Arpels Pour Homme into the mix.

Both dark and powerful, with a touch of sexy. Lots of projection. Maybe too much for people with "aquatic" tastes. Reasonably priced too.

I just picked up an old favorite too- Boucheron Pour Homme. Very elegant and sophisticated citrus. For me, it's like Blenheim Bouquet with more legs.

I've read Antaeus has lots of cedar, sandalwood and patchouli. Is that your take on it? I've been interested/curious, but haven't tried it yet.

Also, I have a 1 oz bottle of Boucheron EdP on the way for my wife, and have been curious about the B. pour Homme.

Thanks!

Anteus mostly woody in feel after drydown to me, yes. FYI, it starts a little gnarly - I think for me its the clary sage which seemed to be used a bit in the 80's in some of the power frags. (Lauder for Men has it too).

It also contains castoreum which is kind of musky, animalic note- a tad nasty.
But I dont' sense it at a level that makes it noxious ( I think castoreum is the heavy hitter note in Yatagan that drives some people nuts). Very manly scent. Test it. SWMBO could loathe it easily.

I think you'll like the Boucheron. I think it's very underated and a lot guys in here would like it. I wouldn't say it smells a lot like BB, but it's sort of in the same territory. Maybe a tad "friendlier."

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on both Antaeus and Boucheron. They both sound like they are worth getting closer to look for a first-hand take on them.

I have a bottle of the vintage Anteaus --the original formulation before they cut down on the beeswax absolute component -- and it's one of my favorite scents. On the plus side, the bottle will last for years, because a tiny bit of Antaeus goes a very long way on me.
