What's new

Post your local/flea market stone scores. (There's none left. Tim found them all.)

This last weekend my allergies got me down so bad I had to stay home and not go out stone/razor hunting.
I went into work today thinking about what kind of stone I might have missed out on when a co-worker came up to me and said "I was at a garage sale and got a box of tools for $5 and this was at the bottom so I want you to have it."
8" x 2" x 1" Soft Black Ark
I insisted he take the $10 bill I handed him.

Even when I stay home these things some how find me!
Note that someone scored the end to make a slurry stone. Would this work better with slurry?

Nice score. I'd say there's a fair chance that's a Washita. A good overnight soak in simple green would clean it up nicely and help to confirm the ID.

If it's an Arkansas or a Washita, then it should not be used with a slurry, generally speaking. It should be used with oil. The scoring there may have been for another reason. Soak it in SG, as David suggests, to see what that baby really is made of.

I'll give it a SG soak but I'm pretty sure it's a black ark. I scrubbed it with Dawn and there was very little dirt on it. I also lapped it a little on 150 w/d and it's softer than a smaller hard black ark I have. Where it was lapped it looks just like the small black ark under a magnifying glass. I didn't know that all black arks are hard. This one just seemed softer than my smaller one.

Yes, there are soft arks that are black. Take some surface shots of it once it's cleaned up. SG is very helpful for any standing grime with oil-stones in any case. I've used it to find out that black hard Arkansas stones as advertised were actually fine Indias, and so forth. ;-)

Nice stone, especially being delivered to you. How did it clean up?

Picken's have been in summer slow mode. Markets and sales are quite with only the serious shoppers and sellers out. With that said, found these two stones among others things at a sale of a retired barber today. A 6 inch Queer Creek and a 5 inch Coticule. Two handsome stones.

Coti lighting strikes twice in the same weekend. A new seller at the flea market had his lifetime collection of sharpening stones. I looked through 60 pounds of carbos, crystos and indies and all sort of look alike synthetic stones and did not want any until I got to the bottom and found these 2 or make that 3 Coti's. One was broken in half, oh the pain, it was a wavy natural. Have not decided if I will repair or use as slurry stones. I am leaning towards repair. 6 x 1 1/4 and 1 x 4 is the smallest

Damn that’s a shame. It looks like it fits together fairly well? If so I say try and repair it. Nice finds Tim.

Thank you David. I have a 7 x 2 x 3/8 BBW I rescued that has lost it coticule. Will make a good backer. Thinking epoxy the pieces together and thin CA to fill the crack after cured. All pieces together will make a nice marriage.

While traveling on a working vacation, I found a new flea markets. Love new sellers and they did not disappoint. Among other thing, I came home with a boxed 8 x 2 Queer Creek Ohio Blue and a wavy Coticule, 5 x 2 1/2. The Coti only had the bottom of the box so no provenance info. Both look to have no to very little use.

Two nice finds today. A 8x2 boxed Norton (HB-8) Hard Arkansas and a 5 x 2 1/2 coticule followed me home from the market. An additional Coti layer started to form in the middle of the BBW but did not quite get there

Florida flea markets are good but a good amount come from estate and yard sales, thrift and junk shops. Even got a Coti from goodwill. Snowbirds will be back soon and look forward to seeing what tribute they're bringing me

It does not happen every time. Two flea markets today and the only thing I got was dirty feet
