looking to re-scale some straights and was curious as to tortoise or faux.. thanks
I've posted this guy a few times before, but...
That is just awesome
Thank you sir. That is what I was thinking when I first saw it, and again when yoinking it at a good price, and then anxiously waiting for it, checking my mailbox each day...
It is one of the jewels of my collection, although I will never restore or shave with it. It is a museum piece for me. I know that will drive some of you guys nuts.
Restore it I completely agree with you-would not touch it, it looks just awesome.
Shave with it-I might have a go at it, it looks like the spine and edge are in good condition, might set the bevel with a real sloe slow, maybe even a 4K stone and go ever so slowly and then shave with it.
I think that would look even better with a nice shiny, sharp bevel. Heck I might even add a few layers of tape to keep that bevel tiny.
I've thought about it, but to be honest I have no reason to believe that the thing will shave any better than any other razor in my collection. So the only real reason to hone it is the "cool factor" of using a razor that could be pushing 300 YO. And that is pretty cool. But it would mean removing the patina on the blade, and that is part of the artefact. It is also what has protected the razor from active rust all these years.
My go-to razor is ~150 YO, and that is enough to fire my imagination. I think I'll keep this one a display piece.
