Please help! Suggest soap!

Easy huh?

This is my first post. Hi!

Well I've been on the DE for a couple years now. I started with an HD, and when I lost it across the country recently. I now have a 33C. The HD is more comfortable, but tbh I get about the same shave with the 33c. anyhow...

When I first started I was using Col Conk. I started with amber and well, stuck. I was using a bowl, but I found that doing it on my face was MUCH FASTER. So there I was for a year and a half.

But I while back i got a bit of a bug and decided to treat myself with some Tabac, still right on the face. Oh my.

When i felt the SOLID lather, it was love. The scent however, I am not a total fan of.

Here's my setup: I have a Merkur 33c. I am considering a straight to a dangerous degree. I'll likely have one by spring at the latest.

At this instant I am using TRIG, I'll be back to my favorite Crystals, I also have some Vidyut Durasharp (silver edge, retro package), I sparingly use Dorco 300, Feathers cut skin too readily (but lovely with care, and I do stock it for some days), astra TEAR ME UP for some reason, but I have a bunch of blades on the way to try out (Timor Solingen, Shark, Bolzano) and a few from some samples (lots of big ben/asco/LORD/racer, some swedes) a few other variety of Vidyut, but I primarily use israeli personna / (mainly here) crystal, if there is a difference?

And a lowely omega 10066.

I use Nivea Sensitive Skin ASB. Sometimes, now rarely, I use that bottle of shave secret i got from WalMart. It works for me.

I'm looking to pick up some soap, since I've tried the Tabac, I see what the hubbub is. What I'd ideally like is a soap that lathers like Tabac, wince I've been completely spoiled, with the longevity, with the nice amber scent. But theres more!

Since I'm having fun now more than ever, I want to try more!
I'm thinking about the Erasmic and the ARKO, and some Mitchells Wool Fat and DR Harris and Proraso and Taylor of Old Bond, and p190 and Mama Bear but what to do?

If you want to educate me, I'd be grateful here. Keep in mind my cheap brush, and consider my blade preference already, how would you rank my options thus far?

I don't really want to spend $300 on soaps, as I could EASILY if I go high end AoS and such, but one very expensive, a moderate and a few cheapish soaps would be my ideal to work with over the next three months.

I like scents like the Col Conk amber, and I suspect a patchouli or sandalwood, maybe a mint in there. Clean scent is alright, but I have that heartily covered with Tabac.

The options are boggling where I am, so, If you give me some off the cuff suggestions if you are close to my shaving shoes, it would greatly help my decision making. If you're like me or were, what did you go to?

Wow.

You might want to consider de-caf.

But at any rate, get some Czech and Speake Oxford and Cambridge. Tallow, nice mix of peppermint and lavender. Can't go wrong.

Thick, tallowy, easy to lather + appealing neutral scent + relatively inexpensive = Valobra and/or Speick shave sticks to me.

Most of the ones you mentioned are very good also.

Another one you might consider is Irisch Moos shave stick.
The lather is very similar to Tabac, with a pine/moss/spice/"green" type scent.

I have not tried Erasmic, p190, or ARKO, but of your others mentioned I would recommend MWF. For me DR Harris was not a good performer, my skin has a bad reaction to Proraso, TOBS was a mediocre performer and the Mama Bears I tried were ok, but not as good as MWF… IMHO.

I also like Gold Dachs and Provence Sante Green Tea.

I own two soaps:

Trumper's Limes
Fitjar Fjellheim

Both are wonderful soaps, but for the moment I'm having a "fitjar period":001_smile Great soap!

Some good cheaper soaps that are great performers are Saint Charles Shave, Ogallala Bay Rum, and Queen Charlotte Shave Cream. The Queen Charlotte is called a shave cream/shave soap, basically a very thick cream! I have the Saint Charles shave soap in Sandalwood and it is phenomenal. Also Ogallala Bay rum has tons of great scents and solid performance.

Let the tabac sit and age 3 or 4 months. Either the scent gets WAAAAY better or you just start to miss it and convince yourself it got way better.

Irische Moo's is an alternative (Tabac that smells a lot like Irish Spring soap). I remember La Toja Stick working almost as well as Tabac (but too harsh for my face, left me sore). Vintage Old Spice and Williams are right up there as well (scentless thanks to father time).

If you're not adverse to shave sticks, then Speick, Palmolive and Irish Moos are all great choices that will provide a Tabac-like shave (because they all have tallow in them).

Get some Arko. Lathers like a lathering weasel would if the weasel was a wet-shaving weasel-God whacked out on Mountain Dew and steroids and was calling down the wrath of lather on the unwashed masses that really needed a thick, creamy tallow pillow o' shaving goodness to protect them from the perdition of nicks and cuts.

Plus, the scent is...well, let's just say after trying Arko, you will quit yer bellyaching about that nice, well behaved Tabac scent.

Okay! Great suggestions! From what I'm hearing, I'm leaning towards Spieck, Irish Moos (pine/moss/green, Okay!), Arkos, and some mitchells wool fat.

Checking into Fitjar Fjellheim, I do like the sound of pine/juniper scent. That really does appeal to me.

Five or six soaps should keep me very occupied!

Where can I mail order Czech and Speake? I have never seen this locally, or in the usual haunts. How expensive is this normally?

I'm leaning away from AoS due to cost right now, since i have a good number of other options. Later I will try it. Honestly I am for having some fun right now. I never thought soap was fun, oh!

Can anyone tell me about the formulation of palmolive? An acquaintance had told me that he loved it, he is Egyptian, and has a different product gamut than is available to me. He told me he used palmolive and lords back home. I understand there are different formulations? Is one better or just different? How can I tell which is which?

I was thinking the same thing. What's with the communism title?

Please don't overthink it... it is my internet username. My apologies to you if I have caused some sort of offense.

Thanks a million for suggestions, I can read reviews out the ying yang or browse and browse, etc. but asking is very helpful in selection. Thanks.

forget Czech and Speake/AoS. They are expensive soaps and they are made by Valobra. The only difference is the scent. Instead get Valobra shave stick, same stuff at much better price.

If you like Tabac, Irisch Moos is the way to go. Other good soaps that I suggest you try are:

MWF - that goes without saying, can be hard to lather, but it's worth it, I didn't have any issues with it.
Valobra - as mentioned above.
Cella - Great italian soft soap, very slick. I think you will have hard time trying to find p.160 since it's discontinued, but this is great and similar enough. Almond scent, not very sweet, which p.160 is.
Provence Sante Green Tea - Great smelling vegetable/shea butter french soap. Gives great shave.
Institut Karite - another great shea butter french soap, you should at least try this one or Provence Sante.

Also you should be able to find L'occitane CADE some place locally, great soap and great scent.

If it helps the 3 soaps I'm stocked up on are MWF (4 pucks), Provence Sante (3 pucks), Valobra (2 sticks). I will also add Cella to it or P.160 if I can find it...

Also to get MWF cheap get it from here: http://www.winghamwoolwork.co.uk/sundries.php

Make sure it's the shave soap which is right at the bottom of the soap list and not the bath soap.
