What's new

Please help me find a non-burning Rose!

The title says it all. What can I say, I'm a sucker for that manly, English rose smell. I've tried Trumpers Rose soap and DR Harris Rose cream. The Trumpers really burned during the shave...the Harris not as much, but still unpleasant. Both burns went away immediately after rinsing. Looking at the archives, it seems this is a common problem. Is it the Rose Hip oil that causes the reaction? Are there other products out there that are milder or have friendlier ingredients?

As much as I love this smell, I wish I could find something that works. I may just have to come to grips with an allergy to rose oil, but I'm willing to try new stuff.

Looks like a good suggestion from Rockviper. I haven't tried it myself, but it is usually praised when it is mentioned.

I had a reaction to Trumper's rose cream, I have not tried D.R. Harris. T&H and TOBS rose creams worked very well for me.

I like Rose scents but I don't seem to have a problem with most of them. I'm looking forward to my sample of T&H Rose cream, hoping it's a good one. The performance of the other T&H samples have been excellent so far. Taylor Rose cream and Salter Wild Rose (scent is more a tea rose) are both good. And I use Trumper Rose soap without a problem. The only Rose cream that gave me some tingling was Vintage Blades, yet I gave it to a friend with sensitive skin and it didn't bother him. That one has been discontinued. Rose of Bulgaria is another I want to try.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I'll order the Rose of Bulgaria.....at $5.99 it's definitely worth a try.

+1 for TOBS Rose, never had any problems.

All this talk of rose made me use my T&H Rose cream sample today. T&H Rose will definitely be replacing my TOBS Rose when that tub is done if not before. The Rose scent of the TOBS and T&H are very close, but the overall protection and performance from the T&H samples have been better than other creams I've used. I didn't care for Harris cream (lavender) at all and sold mine after 5-6 uses.

If you do order Rose of Bulgaria, please post your comments on it.

I've used Truefitt+Hill Rose for years and find it delightful. I have very sensitive, allergic skin and it never once has bothered me at all.And it makes great, thick lather .The scent is very pleasant also.

Just an update - I tried the TOBS Rose this morning. Great scent, nice lather, and most importantly, no burn! Thanks to Brian for sharing a sample for me to try.

Now I'm going to try T&H Rose and Rose of Bulgaria when those arrive.

Hello mad dog,

I have very sensitive, allergic skin. But I've been using T+H Rose cream for years and it has never bothered me at all. And the scent is decent too. Give it a try. It makes very good lather also.

This is a YMMV thing.
Every mans skin is different.
Unfortunately seeking the answer to your question in here is a waste of time.

One persons allergy will be another persons heaven cream.

With that said, I love Cyril Salters Wild Rose, but hate the pot it comes in.
I enjoy my TF&H Rose even more - these 2 roses are my favorite Rose creams.

Actually, I've got a few great suggestions already, and one of them has proven to be non-burning. Yes, it's a YMMV thing, but the whole exercise was in identifying new things to try and then narrow down to one or two that work. And sometimes there are known allergens (like almond - benzaldehyde) that can irritate some skins. The suggestions here pointed to other creams that use different fragrances to achieve the same rose smell but have not irritated my skin. Well worth my time

Glad you find some solutions you can use, Matt :thumbup1:

If you can find the now discontinued AOS Rose shaving cream for women, you should also try that - but it's very hard to get........it's very gentle and skin friendly

Thought I'd update this with a quick review of the Rose of Bulgaria cream. It finally arrived this weekend, so I gave it a spin this morning. First thing I noticed was that it has a very strong scent. Nearly gave me a headache. But I dutifully lathered up with my Simpson Colonel X2L and went about the shave. This cream lathers like a champ! A couple of minutes of face lathering yielded very thick and creamy lather. I easily had enough for 3 passes, probably 4 or 5 if I'd wanted. And boy was it slick. I'd put it up there with Tabac or AOS. Very nice protection against the razor. One of the few creams or soaps I've encountered that will allow you to touch up without re-lathering. And, most importantly, no burn!

Hope that helps anyone curious about this cream. For $5.99, this one's a winner, if you can tolerate the strong scent.

Out of the others I tried, T&H was good, but still some minor stinging. TOBS was spectacular. Great, subtle, masculine scent, gorgeous lather, and no burn. Rose of Bulgaria (what do we call this, ROBS?) was superb, a bit heavy on the frag, but will still make it into my rotation.

Glad to here that you have found something good on your face! If you ever feel like trying one more, my favorite Rose Cream is QCS Rose Otto. To me it smells very similar to RoB, but leaves my skin feeling buttery soft after I rinse.
