Plate loss with black underneath in fat handle Tech

This Canadian WWII Tech shaves beautifully, but the plating is not that great. One flea-bite and a bit of 'bubbling' on top of the head, and underneath, there is a patch where it has worn off completely. Underneath, as you can see in the picture, the metal is black and rough to the touch. It seems to cause rust on blades after a few days. Any idea what the metal is, why it reacts like this, and if there's anything I can do (short of replating) to make it better? I'd like to keep shaving with it, but the rust on the blades is not ideal.

Other than replating you can remove the oxidation and rub some vaseline (petroleum jelly) on the inside of the head when you change the blade.
Also after every shave make sure the razor is properly dried, I always spray my safety razors with some alcohol mixed with a little bit of mineral oil, the alcohol will evaporate fast and the thin oil film will protect/lubricate the razor and blade.

What's the best way to remove oxidation? I've tried metal polish, but it doesn't seem to make any difference. Whatever is under the nickel plating on this razor, it doesn't look like brass.

It should be brass under the nickel, is that black stuff something else that is not the underlying metal? It looks like it can be scraped off, from the pictures it looks like the black stuff is above the plating...

I have a red tip that had oxidation just like that. Metal polish and a very determined attitude will take it off, but be careful not to strip the plating anywhere else. It does take some patience though. Good luck!

Thanks for the encouragement! Perseverance with the metal polish has brought the black down to a kind of pitted silver area. Much better :001_smile Will keep going with it. Patience indeed required.
