What's new

Planning a project

I need to whip my ever expanding collection of hygiene products into some shape. Mostly shave stuff. So I was thinking about building a small shelf with a couple of small drawers at the bottom. The shelves would be for soaps, creams, deodorant, facial wash, etc. The small drawers for blades, samples, toothpaste, etc. I'm also trying to think of the best way to integrate a brush holder and one for the razor too. I nifty idea I also had was to try and work a hidden blade bank into it somewhere. It'd be neat to have an easily accessible slot to drop them in. I'm not sure how that would work as of yet but I think it's be a neat feature.

I'm not planning for it to be huge but big enough to hold my 4 soaps and one cream plus a few more for expansion. Any more can be stashed and rotated as needed. :001_rolle

This is all still just an idea and a quick sketch but I'd curious what suggestions and ideas folks might have before I go too much further. I was thing about using Oak for the wood.

sounds like a cool idea. whatever size you decide is more than enought for it... double it!

I was thinking an extention to the bathroom. You never know how big AD can get...
Started with this..

Currently here with much muttering from the Missus, usual stuff, you only shave once a day, how much soap do you need??

You can never have too much stuff!!

BTW if you ever do get a design for your cabinet, I would be keen to see it.

Good luck

Cheers

I've built enough cabinets over the years to have learned a few things.

One - be very careful about the sort of material you use for this sort of project. Most hardwood, plywood, chipboard, mdf, etc. does not react well to moisture. If you are planning on using wood - I'd suggest a tropical hardwood like teak. Oak, cherry, etc. can be used - but make sure it is finished with several coats of a polyurethane - and try and keep moisture to a minimum. Avoid crossgrain glue-ups, and make allowances for expansion in drawer sides, etc.

The other material that can succesfully be used in a wet bathroom situation is a laminate. Cutting and fitting laminate to a substrate is an art unto itself.

Two: Think very carefully about the means used to fasten bathroom cabinets together. Common steel screws can very rapidly get rusty, and migrate rust stains through to the surface. Regular woodglues have a nasty habit of coming apart in high humidity.

Three: Think carefully about hardware for doors and drawer slides. Bathroom junk can be very heavy, and drawers and doors that get opened frequently have a habit of getting out of alignment.

Four: Anything underneath a bathroom countertop/vanity is going to get wet at some point or another. Keep this in mind, and you'll avoid disappointment.

TELL me about it...I get an earful every time an order comes in, and I have to rotate stuff to keep my little allotment of evenly divided square inches from intruding into neutral territory. Never mind that 90% of the medicine cabinet is stuffed with HER (my wife's, not yours) stuff. We plan on doing some additions to our home in a few years. What am I gonna push for? Yep...a bathroom with locking door, plenty of shelving, and a built in sound system. Possibly a sauna. That would kick ***...
