Pipes with Larger Bowls

Hello all, I am relatively new to pipe smoking and have 3 pipes (Peterson St. Patrick's Day Rhodesian, MM Diplomat and Grabow Omega). While I'll I have had good smokes with each of them, the bowls seem to small for Flake Tobacco.

So I am looking for suggestions for pipes with a larger bowl that will permit me to use at least a whole flake.

The only ones that I have seen so far are the Savinelli Hercules line (1" Diameter x 2" depth) and Nordling Freehands.

I would like to keep it under $100 if possible.

I have a couple Nording freehands and they are good smokers. However most do like their flakes in smaller pipes as flakes tend to be a little stronger and burn longer than most ribbon cut pipe tobaccos. That doesn't mean you have to like that of course.

Any pipe with an internal depth of over 1.75 inches should be sufficient to hold a flake folded in half, and a internal diameter of .8 should accept a twisted flake without too much trouble.

The issue is that flakes are not sliced to a uniform thickness. . So a pipe that can fit a whole flake from one maker may not quite fit a flake from someone else.

Used to have fun with Commander Yellow Pantyhose
I also like a large bowl, but like a classic looking pipe (no freehands). My Hardcastle is one of the biggest bowls I could find. Hardcastle is owned by Dunhill, and mine is an excellent pipe for <$100.

I have never really worried about whole flakes, usually I either fold them or rip them in half. I agree with the Nording freehands, BIG bowls on some of them.

I normally rub a couple flakes out and use enough to fill whatever pipe I'm smoking at the time and then put the left over tobacco back inside the tin on top of the other flakes.

Hmm.... Not understanding exactly what flake is and how it is loaded into the pipe.

I need to learn, as I have 3 flake tins on order.

A flake is, lets just say, kind of like a strip of bacon. Compressed tobacco cut into a slice, as opposed to the loose ribbon cuts we normally get. It can be folded, rolled, or 'rubbed out' meaning rubbed between the palms of your hands to break it into the ribbon style. It is quite versatile as it can be rubbed to many different textures. It can be a bit tricky to get used to, but many pipe smokers prefer this type of tobacco, along with plugs and ropes.

Flake tobacco is pressed together into blocks and then sliced into strips or rounds, here are a few pics the top is Erinmore flake, second is Dunhill Deluxe Navy Rolls and the last is Peterson's Irish Flake ;-) Many people just fold them and stuff them into their pipe, but I rub them out and then load my pipe.

Smoking flakes without rubbing them out still confounds me. Fold and stuff, roll and stuff etc. I end up with a bitter tasting lump of Va charcoal in the pipe. Hopefully the technique catches up soon.

Same here...I can get halfway through a bowl then it get's hard and not so pleasant tasting, lol. I've gotten used to rubbing flake out now, it's part of my ritual, I suppose.

Just ordered a Nording Semi-Rusticated Signature Freehand from smokingpipe.com. It's generally a Dublin style pipe with a 1" x 1.5" interior bowl dimensions.

Flake can be challenging sometimes. I find it sometimes to be rather wet, so you may want to consider letting it dry a bit. 10-15 minutes under a desk lamp works. There's all kinds of methods to load a bowl of flake, the twist and stuff, the fold and cram, rubbing... just find what works for your particular pipe/bowl size.

Good point. I like my tobacco quite dry, so I usually take out what I want to smoke the night before and let it dry overnight.

I smoke only flake or broken flake tobaccos and I find that I tend to like the smaller bowls for some of the flake I smoke. I had one pipe that would hold one rubbed out flake of Stokkeby Luxury Navy Flake and it provided the best smoke of any of my pipes. I also used to have a very small Petersen that held only one coin of Escudo and it also was an excellent flake pipe.

I like to rub my flake out in my palm. I find it burns more evenly for me that way. As for a big bowl, if you are a fan of full bents, give an Oom Paul shape a try. The Oom typically has a cavernous bowl that will hold a ton of tobacco and smoke for a LONG time. Its bowl is very deep, and usually not any wider than your average Dublin or Zulu bowl. This helps keep a nice cherry that doesn't smoke too hot compared to some of the big wide "D-cell" bowls out there.
