Pipe Smoking in Your Car

Sometimes my weekdays are so busy it seems like the only time I have to myself is when I am commuting home from work. Also, with the weather so cold it is hard to enjoy smoking outside the tobaccos that are too "smelly" to smoke inside. I never smoked a pipe in my car out of fear of stinking up the car and my clothes, but I kind of like the idea of enjoying a pipe on my way home on the days I know I won't be able to enjoy one otherwise.

So my question is, how many of you pipe smokers enjoy a pipe in the car and if so, is there any insider secrets on keeping your car and clothes from smelling like stale smoke all the time?...or is this just a bad idea altogether? :thumbdown:lol:

I'd say if you are willing to accept that you are a smoker and that things will smell like smoke, smoking in the car is definitely a relaxing way to make a commute more enjoyable. Just be sure to load your bowl before you start driving! Your car will smell of smoke though and you will have to accept it. There are ways you can reduce the smokey smell in there. Make sure the window is open while smoking, the more the better. Try to direct all puffs right out the window. You can get charcoal for fish tanks at a pet supply store and fill a porous container (pantyhose works well) and slip it under the seat. It will help absorb some of the funk. You can also get some dryer sheets and put them under the seats. Your car will have that 'clean laundry smell' but that's probably a little better than the ashtray smell. You can also get febreeze auto spray which penetrates the fabric of the seats and rug to get the stink out. Air fresheners will just cover up smells but not really address them. They are better than nothing though.

I think you should just do it. If you don't have kids in the car, and the car belongs to you, why not enjoy it?

The other thing that helps reduce it, don't keep the ashes/astray with anything in it in the car for any real length of time. My gf and I are both cig smokers, though lately I've been using my pipes and ecig pretty exclusively, and both smoke in our cars. I never use the ashtray in the car, I toss the cigs an such into a disposable coffee cup I invariably have in the cup holders and they get removed as soon as they have been used for an ashtray. The gf has a cup shaped ashtray she keeps, usually mostly filled before it's emptied, and her vehicle has a *lot* more stale smoke/stale tobacco scent than mine.

Removable and washable seat covers help as well, removed and washed once a week or so.

Have the windows cracked or open as much as is comfortable on both sides of the car/truck, run the heater/AC on high with the fans on high, get as much air circulation as possible. Remove smoking materials from vehicle ASAP or place in a sealed container.

I have kids, so there's no smoking inside, but I have been known to smoke my pipe in the van, although always with the window cracked. Too cold to stand outside in 20 F weather for 30-40 minutes at a time. The smokey smell tends to fade after an hour or so, especially if you drive somewhere with the window down. Febreeze and air fresheners help too.

As for clothes, there's no helping that.

If you are driving a leased car, check the fine print in your lease. Although it may not spell out anything about smoking, you may have a "condition" problem when you turn the car back.

Open the window, wear a coat to cover your clothes, maybe a hat. Tamp at stop signs and red lights... try to not clamp too hard...

Do what you want. I smoke mine in my vehicle. I'm a pipe smoker and I embrace that fact. If I smell like it, well it's because that's what I do... I would caution you about creating a wind storm in your car, good way to burn up a pipe. It makes it burn too hot just like smoking in the wind does. Just get some exhaust going so you don't smoke yourself out. Hose down your interior with Febreze if you want.

It's a pipe, not a rocket. Dont' make it more complicated than need be.

I'm with COHunter here, I take pride in the fact that I'm a pipe-smoker, and rarely will be found without a stem secured firmly between my lips while behind the wheel. While pipe-smoke will leave an aroma behind (and there are several awesome suggestions to alleviate this above), it's nothing like getting into a cigarette smokers vehicle.

This should be included in every pipe-sock.

I like it, I am usually smoking in my car, gives it a nice smell instead of the normal Second hand Acura smell that is dull like dishwater. Since most of my friends smoke or don't mind smoking they usually comment on it. For the few people that don't like it... there is an invention called the retractable window, I have it installed in my car, great for getting fresh air in.

The only time my truck smelled was when I dropped a half smoked bowl under the seat and forgot about it. Other than that the smell seems to dissipate.

I smoke in my car all the time and it doesn't smell at all. In addition to the above advice, leave all the windows open whenever the car is home (it's a lot easier if you keep the car in your garage).

As a little background, SWMBO and I are of the age where both of our Dads smoked, and so did most other people (it was impolite not to have an ashtray on the coffee table and you could smoke in grocery stores, airplanes, etc.) Since her car didn't come with ashtrays she got the portable self-extinguishing ashtray for her car ('bout the size of a large coffee cup and she doesn't empty it until full, or more) and has bought the Frebreze automobile sticks that go in the dashboard heater/air conditioner vents at Wally World and it seems to help... I guess, since I'm kinda inured to it. Me, I don't care about my truck or Camaro; if you don't like it don't ride in it. But we don't have kids living at home.

I like the charcoal recommendation above.

One thing I accidentally came across was using kitty litter in the bottom of an ashtray for my cigs. at work. I put a medium sized plant container (ceramic for looks) on a stand outside of the office door of a morning that has about 2-3 inches of kitty litter in it and snuff things out there. I do empty the cig. butts every day when I leave, but then I bring it back inside with the kitty litter still in it. The boss told me later that she was a little concerned about the residue in the unchanged kitty litter starting to smell after awhile but it never did. Now they put it outside even when I'm not there so the clients can put cigs. out and not stamp them out on the sidewalk just outside the door. Haven't tried it with pipe dottle though.

Long story short...window cracked, charcoal or kitty litter somewhere in the car, Frebreze spray on the seats and the Frebreze stick in the vents, empty ashtray when you get out and use kitty litter in it (maybe get a kitty litter scoop or something to clean out the dottle and leave the litter in it).

This might give you an excuse to buy a smoking jacket to protect your clothes, but I don't know what kind of looks you'd get wearing one in a car. :scared:

I think that's more imagery than I want. :biggrin1:

I am a huge car/commuter/pipe&cigar smoker. Windows cracked, puffing out of the windows, ashes only out of the window and STILL i stink if smoke. However it turns a 1-1/2 to 2 hour ride into absolute pleasure!

I like it, nothing looks worse to me than a bunch of butts on the ground around a door. Which is really annoying when businesses get rid of ashtrays, people are still going to smoke outside, but now they are either going to hold onto the butt until they find a garbage can or just toss it.

And now my Journeymen think I'm crazy because I'm laughing randomly. BWHAHAHAHAHA
I get that every once and a while. In the great outdoors someone asked for advice about starting fires. It was all good until someone said "knock out a squirrel and squeeze its butt and put the juices on the wood" or something to that effect. I was managing to stifle myself, then someone else popped in and said "that's how Chuck Norris does it". I lost it then.
