Pipe Identification

I know photos would help, but my phone was in the car.......So wondering if I could get an idea of what this pipe might be, the bowl was aluminum with large threads on the outside, a threaded ring on top, under the ring was a corn cob insert. Any ideas?

$images.jpeg here it is.

I have no idea if Missouri Meerschaum makes any cob bowls that are the same size as the ones needed for the Aristocob, but if you ever need a replacement, MM will sell you cob bowls without the hole drilled in the side for the shank, they cost the same as a fully finished pipe but it may be something to look into. Some modification will need to be done for the draft hole in the bottom obviously.

They don't make the bowls anymore... sadly.

So i guess it would be silly to purchase this since they no longer make inserts?

Bowls occasionally pop up on eBay.

You could also try fashioning your own inserts, which is what my father plans on doing once he runs out of his current stock.

Correct. What I am saying is MM will sell cob bowls from the standard shapes in their product line without the hole drilled in the sidewall that may be modified to fit the Aristocob. What I am not sure of is if any of the standard shapes they sell will fit the pipe without needing to reshape the cob too much.

Sorry, I misread.

Even if they did, you'd still have to tinker with the cob by inserting a metal bottom. If you just put in a normal cob, you'll burn out the bottom of it in relatively short order.

being metal if the cob does burn out it doesnt burn out the pipe and will probably build cake and smoke ok. I would get it and noodle with a replacement insert and dont overthink it if you have any hardwood you could make an insert from that too so could have many options

The cob is going to burn out much faster than a normal cob because the hole is on the bottom. That's why the original inserts have metal lined on the bottom of the cob to prevent burning through the bottom.

It's a great pipe.... but it'll take some old fashion engineering to make a non-official insert work. My dad's saving up the metal inserts from previous burnt out inserts and plans on trying to make his own cobs for them to go into. No clue how he plans on doing it, but he gets creative when he has to.

Jason, be sure and start another thread with pictures if your dad gets to tinkering on that!

It'll be a while... he still has 3 or 4 NOS inserts left. He also only occasionally smokes due to COPD and an unapproving wife. My mom's actually quite annoyed at me for getting him back into pipe smoking after she successfully made him quit years ago.

But... I'll definitely take notes on how he does it.
