Pinaud Bay Rum

I wanted to take the plunge into Bay Rum for the first time so I went and got a bottle since its available at Walgreen's. But I have no point of reference with bay rum. How does this compare to the others? Did I settle for an inferior bay rum? Should I mix it with a different bay rum or add bay rum oil to it?

If it's the Virgin Island Bay Rum, which I think is the only variety Pinaud makes, (correct me if I'm wrong on this one, guys) I love the stuff. If you like how it smells, have at it. I think there is a pretty wide variety on the bay rum scene.

Hey that's neat - I may have to check my local Walgreens. Pinaud BR is just fine. In fact, now that I've tried pretty much all of Pinaud's line - it's one of their best. It's a bit "clove-y" as BRs go. A nice clean standard might be Master's, available at Sally's if you have one locally. You could do much worse. Enjoy essentially the same spices as pumpkin pie - Pinaud BR is excellent for Thanksgiving to Christmas.

There have been several Bay Rum-related threads. I found this one from earlier this year very helpful when I had the same question. I picked up some Pinaud Bay Rum along with some other stuff on BST. I find it overwhelming. What I use regularly is Dominica Bay Rum with Lime, although I also have the classic (without lime) version, which I also like, just not as much as the with lime. In addition, I bought 4 bottles of Captain's Choice, two of which I gifted. It's a fine product -- obviously high quality. Most days I like Dominica a little better, but that's purely subjective and not entirely constant with me. Although I've read Captain's Choice contains no clove, it somehow smells just a little clovey to me, and I'm pretty sure I recall at least one other person having made the same observation. That's not bad at all. It's just different, possibly a little more potent, but still pure, whereas Pinaud is something else. This isn't intended as a put-down of Pinaud Bay Rum. It all comes down to what you like. I just suspect Pinaud's version is not as traditionally pure as either Captain's Choice or the Dominica products.

I still try new stuff now and then, but for what it's worth I've pretty much settled on Musgo Real, Proraso AS (often both), Dominica Lime BR, Dominica Classic BR, and Captain's Choice BR, with Floyd Blue, Lucky Tiger, Tabac, and now La Toja thrown in for variety now and then.

Why wouldn't the Pinaud Bay Rum be a true bay rum? Is it missing something in the ingredients?

I ran across that somewhere else where an explanation was offered. It might be in one of the threads I linked above, but I didn't catch it when I quickly scanned them. I suspect it has less to do with missing than extra ingredients, but I really don't know. What I can say is that, at least to my senses, Pinaud BR is a world apart from both Dominica and Captain's Choice BRs, and I prefer the latter to by far. But that's not intended as a knock on Pinaud.

I've had two 12 oz. bottles of Pinaud VIBR sitting in my drugstore.com basket for a couple of weeks now. Total of $11.99 for both bottles! Never tried the stuff but this is the cheapest I've been able to find it. Worth it or go Dominica?

Apples and rutabagas in my book. Hands down Dominica for me. The lime version is my favorite. Pinaud BR gags me -- way too strident. But it's all a matter of personal taste.

Well I ordered the Clubman Bay Rum so I hope I like it! I've had my eye on the Dominica Lime Bay Rum from West Coast Shaving - going to ask for some for Christmas.

I've got some Masters Bay Rum lying around so maybe I'll mix some 50/50 with the VIBR.

yeah, dominica bay rum is made from bay leaves from the island i'm pretty sure.. I don't know about Pinaud nor do I care. I love them both.

I just got the Pinaud Virgin Island Bay Rum, and it's....so-so. I got it cause I had a sample of Ogallala Bay Rum and Sandalwood which I really liked. Course, it's still 200 times better than the Veg.

I love the VIBR, but SWMBO doesn't... I don't get to use it too much. Only when she leaves for work before me and I'm running behind do I get to wear it. I haven't had a chance to pick up any of the Masters bay rum, but it's on my short list of things to try.
