I got a straight that was purchased off of BST. Thought at the time I was about to be able to splurge on strop and hone but was never able to. Love to have it shave ready to try it out.
get one of the poormans strops or a rup razor strop. you will need one but you wont need a hone yet.
but i must warn you if you get a hone one day they breed.

i meant the dark side of razors,. those recently starting with straights
as for honing. I def see a use for film, especially for those who prefer those edges and for beginning honers... in fact I sort of wish i got a set to try it, instead I went the natural route which took practicing every single night to get a feel for it (and each stone is different to boot, as you well know). but I got a GD from Alfredo that was film lapped and it was just TOO keen without the smoothness I prefer, so I skipped the film. Also fortunate enough to have Jnat edges from him too. WOWOWOWOWOWOW! they are like buttah baby! Smooooth like Dolomite.
Anyhoo, not to hijack the thread... glad to see Rick's got a victi, errr, volunteer

Did you buy it shave ready? You'll def need a strop. Contact Larry/ Whipped Dog and get a $10 strop. It'll serve you good for now. You're welcome to send me the razor and I'll check it out/ get it ready/ what have you. PM me for address.

I'm down!!!! keep in mind I was used to barber's hones prior to finding B&B. the GD shocked me with it's keen-ness, then I treied Coti edges and Jnat edges and just fell in love
but I'm always willing to try something new!!!

I have a sheffield which I won in a pif. It was shave ready when I got it. I honestly coudn't tell one way or another. I have used it several times and have been stropping on blue jeans. It feels like it's pulling hair compared to DE's and SE's. I'd like to get it checked to see if I have screwed up the hone. I'll also be getting a poor man's strop or similar for xmas this year to help me maintain it. Would you be willing to check it out and fix if necessary?
