What's new

PIF. Scales with potential.

Ok this is a little different type of PIF. I already have scales of Burl Red Oak precut from a pattern for a 5/8 - 13/16 using the pattern Le Grelot P.Hospital "Hollow Ground" pattern. The scales are glued together with paper and small amount of glue between. I'm willing to send these to someone to see what they are able to do with them.

Here is a picture of the pre-cut scales.

This is allow someone try make their own scales from a pre-cut set I will send also along with it the divider piece that can be glued into place but the person will have to shape it to these scales. You will have to post pictures of what you have done. If the winner person has any question will post them in this post and the forum will help them with there questions.

So, who is up for the challenge?

Update... You will need to post the blade that you will be putting it in. If you are out of the US you would need to pay for the shipping. So post pics up of your blades and the forum will decide would gets them. So when people start posting up the blades and the voting can begin on who will get the chance to make there razor look even better.

Sounds like fun, can I try it ? I am not CONUS, so I don't know if I qualify.

I will also be including a test piece of wood so you can test your finish first before putting on the scales and you can see what the finish will look like before applying it to the scales.

I updated the rules of the PIF. see the original post. I'm letting the forum decide who would get this.

Fair enough. Here is mine, a humble GD that's been honed nicely, and now shaves way better than it looks, I hope to make it look as nice as it shaves. By the way, I agree to pay for shipping, I think this is a good idea.

I am in.
I have 3 or 4 of those Le Grelot with good blades, but the original plastic scales.
I'll post the pictures on Monday as the only one I have at home is one I just sold.

Ok I got new toy this week a belt sander and I couldn't help myself I shaped the scales they are still glued together. Here are the pictures.

They look real nice!! I'm thinking more and more about getting a belt sander myself, it would definitely make the process faster and a bit more uniform.

Are there any more takers on this PIF? I'll keep it open for the next couple of days for sending this to the person that the forum votes as the best one to try this out. This is for a 3/4 finish set of scales. Just assemble and stain you will have to get the pivots because I'm out of microfastners. If your wanting to try I can send small amount of brass rod with it so you can pin it into place.

To be clear, I know they won't work - just having some fun. I have a few 5/8 at home waiting for new scales. I'll post one up later.

This Le Grelot has been crying for a new dress.
She is in beautiful shape and just needs that little cosmetic help to get back into service.

Just to avoid confusion the above post was a joke. It was in reference to Wolfsveins other PIF. For what's its worth I really do have a nasty ugly set of scales.

Fantastic PIF.

I have this Dubl Duck Stainless that someone put in these Hess scales. I find it a bit unsettling, so I'd love to have a go at making my own scales.
