Pick a Brush Challenge...

Okay here is the criteria for the challenge.

Give your picks for a brush meeting the following requirements:

- Badger
- Cream User
- Face Latherer
... and the challenging part..
- Less than $40 (can be slightly used)

The winner gets that warm fuzzy feeling you get when helping out a fellow member. :tongue_sm

You'll really be helping me out. I've figured out my razor/blade combo, AS/Balm Combo (well I have a stack of samples to try-out too), Prep/Post combo, but my brush is the last piece of the puzzle.

Just bought my wife a car, putting braces on my 14yo daughter, on a quest to be debt free, and I make $40k less a year than I did a year ago due to this economy. So my plopping down $100+ on a brush is not in my cards.

Wee Scot....hands down. Just under $40, a fine little brush. Perfect for face lathering and so efficient with soaps you will save on them too.

My first badger brush was a Tweezerman, which I still have in my rotation. Current prices are around $15. Its a great first badger brush and I used it on soaps and creams with fine results. As you experiment and find other brushes you may like better it always can stand in as a outstanding travel brush.

Hard to go wrong with that line of thinking!

They also sell like hot cakes in BST for near full-price if in the remote chance it does not suit...so you are back in the hunt with only a bit of delay and an important experience under your belt.

Of all the brushes I have bought or restored over the past year...the Wee still wins as the absolute best purchase for me.

If I use a Wee alone I estimate my soap and cream collection would likely last me 2-3 times longer...just because it wastes so little, without seriously compromising my shaves.

If you look in the vendor section on this site under badgerandhone user, they have a sale for a wee scot for 20 pounds - I think that is around $29US, but not sure how much shipping would set you back.

Might end up around the same as the above site.

I just ordered a Commodore XI from Badger & Hone, and shipping (Royal Mail 4business days to California) was only around $4.00.

Ed Jagger Best badger, might be a tad over 40, but still good value.
+1 ... probably the best choice for a first brush, and it might be your last. Even purchased new, its right in your price range.

This is the OEM version of the C&E Best Badger Brush.

The specs on this brush place it smack-dab in the middle of the bell curves for qualities like softness, density, loft, knot-size, etc. After you've used this for a few months, you'll have a much better picture of what your next brush will be.

And if you do decide to upgrade, you'll have no trouble selling this one on the BST forum.

+1, excellent advice here. Nicely said.

I agree. I ordered my EJ BBB Medium direct from the English Shaving Company. Cost me $38 shipped. Excellent deal.
