I had Spitfire and didn't like it at first but I grew to love it. Also really enjoyed their Albion soap. I think they have a great soap base and had great shaves with them, just have to find a scent you like. You can get samples of them from Connaught Shaving.
I bought Spitfire soap and aftershave balm a year ago. I was looking for tallow-based soap but this purchase was mainly on the basis of the story. I'm not a cigarrette smoker but I do enjoy the scent of good cigars and pipe tobacco. The scent described made me think my childhood when smoking was allowed almost anywhere, people wore leather, sat on leather and had leathery accessories.
With the first sniff, the scent came out a bit odd. But, after the first shave and balm, I L-O-V-E-D I-T!!! I got into my car for a long drive afterwards and I caught myself "sniffing myself" the entire trip. It took me back to my childhood, right there to scruffy gas station bars, with leather seats and the surrounding scents of various automotive fluids and smokes from all varieties of tobacco.
I think there's a lesson here. When looking for a soap, scent and function go hand in hand. You need to have them both to your liking. No matter how enticing the scent, if the soap feels dry, you won't use it. No matter how great the feel is, if the scent wrinks your nose, you won't use it.
I didn't have the chance to order samples so I had to take a gamble with this one. It paid out for me but I can see why it might not for someone. At least Spitfire has a scent that accumulates pros and cons alike. The base is wonderful! Thirsty maybe but very workable once you have the angle for it.
