Personna Reds/Astra Platinum

Hey guys, been wanting to order new blades soon and wanted to try a new blade but didn't want to get a sampler I rather order in bulk of at least 50-100. I was wondering which to go with the Reds or the Astra, they both have good reviews and haven't tried them yet. Derby's are my go to blade right now, I've tried others and some just don't agree with my face and Feathers are too sharp for me. Any advice is welcome. Thanks.

I vastly prefer the Astras.

The Red Personnas are nice and smooth, but not sharp enough to whack through my beard without irritation.

Love the Personna Reds...the perfect combination of sharpness and smoothness. My beard dulls most blades after two shaves, but these consistently are great for three.

Astras. The red IP's don't even come close for me.

However, if you have not tried either blade, get them both - it's your face after all. As you can see from the replies so far it's a fairly even split. Either blade might be THE ONE for you. It's also possible that you won't like either blade.

Thanks for the feedback guys it's well appreciated. I actually want to try both and I think I will eventually end up doing so but I've decided to go with the Astras first, only for the reason that Reds already have such a large following it leaves me curious about the Astras. Again thanks!

Oh and I'm only going to order one on account that the boss is starting to get on me about all the products I've been ordering lately so this is my last purchase for a while. I admit though I have been a little out of hand lately but it happens time to time. Haha!

Personally, I think the Astras are way overrated, face-tearing monsters and the Red IPs are marvelous smooth, things. But that's my YMMV.

Before you make the investment in a bunch of blades you may find you don't like, see if someone here will send you a few of each to try. People are pretty nice around here about sharing from their "store." In the PIF area, some folks offer to send little packs around as well.

I rather like the Astras, personally, but IMHO because every man's face is a little different, I'm not gonna promise you anything regarding Astras or IPs or any other blade.

I'm glad you're only ordering one pack for now.

Honestly, if you get a sampler you will be doing yourself a real favor, because while Astras are great blades and a lot of people like them, and while IPs are great blades and a lot of people like them, we're seriously not kidding when we say (type) YMMV.

Seriously, if you order a bunch of one type of blade before trying several, if it turns out that the type you ordered is merely mediocre on your particular face, you won't be happy.

But if you get a sampler you can switch around to your heart's content. And some blades may seriously surprise you. You may find you get your best results, and most pleasurable shaves, with Astras, in fact. Or with Feathers or Gillette 7 O'Clocks. Or with the store brand (i.e. American Personnas) at your local Walgreen's.

But TBH you really will be doing yourself a BIG favor by trying several different blades before actually ordering a whole bunch of one kind.

I like and use both regularly. It depends on what razor I'm using. The Astra is sharper and I find it's perfect for my mild razors. I use it in my Tech and my New. I use the Red Personas in my adjustables.

waiting on the Reds as we speak but i did try the Astra's. Someone sent me a 5 pack and i think i might have gotten some bad blades. 2 of them were nice and smooth but the other 3 were pretty rough/jagged.
