Pens where sections screw out before caps come off

I'm having some difficulty with a pen. It has a cap that screws off but frequently gets stuck so I end up unscrewing the section from the body.

Yes I can then unscrew the cap . . . but this is not right . . . there must be a fix?

Let me try to understand ... the section has the cap threads on it and comes out with the cap? It must be a cartridge/converter style. Usually the cap threads are on the barrel.

What type is it? I'm looking at different pens and having trouble figuring this out.

The FC essential uses to do that to me... both the cap and body threaded onto the section so once in a while the body woild come off and not the cap I never did figure it out

Id imagine if tpu added friction to one and reduced the other it would work out, but I used to make the body as toght as safely possible and not over tightenbthe cap... the body thing would only happen once in a blue moon that way

Yes pretty much what I've done. I think I need a bit of pocket dust in the right spot.

Man mine does that too and it annoys the hell outa me! I go to write something down and end up trying to write with nothing but the barrel of the pen :tongue_sm

Yep, mine does that too ... and did it just now when I read this thread and then picked it up to see ...

uh...+5 to the FC essential. But it doesn't stop me from using it, it's just weird, that's all. Anyone have a pen that does this other than a FC ?

A little research shows that some people have used shellac on either the inside of the barrel or on the section to build up the threading. Not both. And letting it dry well before re-assembly. I was tempted to put on a bit of plumbers teflon tape but I really don't want to make things too tight and crack something.

Not a Balance... its a Sovereign. Pre touchdown so 1945-1947.

That must be a friction fit section. Easy to make it fit a bit tighter, with a tiny bit of shellac. Temporarily, a thin sheet of paper may work as well, but make sure you don't overtighten it. Vintage celluloid cracks easily.

+1 Apply a thin layer of shellac and let it dry thoroughly (If you assemble it wet, the next person to replace the sac will curse your existence!). Give it a test fit...it should be tight, but not overly so. If it's still loose, apply another thin coat...repeat as necessary.

I thought Sheaffer only introduced the threaded sections with the injection moulded pens ... I will have to check my Sheaffers tonight! :)
