Penhaligon's Sartorial

Hello folks,

I was wondering if anyone has tried the new Sartorial from Penhaligons. I have had a bit of an issue trying to find someone that sells decants of it. Any suggestions of where you can get a sample?

There's a thread right below this entitled "sartorial observations" but it's about shoes. I have'nt tried the Pens yet but look forward to doing so soon. From online review descriptions, it has just about every note in the book, so it will be interesting to see how it develops.

I emailed Penhaligon's directly and asked for some samples and of several different edt's and the 2 they sent me were Sartorial and Elixir. Wouldn't hurt to shoot them an email and ask. I sent them my address on Friday and sample went from NJ to TN by Monday.

It's discussed more in the Colognes forum. It's a very nice gentlemen's scent for sure. Kind of a modern spin on a classic fougere (lavender based).
Very much a Pens scent.

Goes quite, quite nicely when well dressed. Quite proper and manly.

Levender huh...i think i may pass on that one

Lavender is certainly a prominent part of it, but I wouldn't dismiss it out of hand because of that. Nice beeswax notes as well that makes it quite warm.

If you know you hate lavender, I won't twist your arm. But don't confuse that with "floral" smelling. It is anything but that. More old school than modern.

It's got a ton of notes: aldehydes, ozonic effect, metallic effect, violet leaf, neroli, cardamom, black pepper, fresh ginger, beeswax, cyclamen, linden blossom, lavender, leather, gurjum wood, patchouli, myrrh, cedar wood, tonka bean, oakmoss, white musk, honey effect, old wood effect, vanilla, amber

From Wikipedia- Fougere: The class of fragrances have the basic accord with a top-note of lavender and base-notes of oakmoss and coumarin. Aromatic fougère, a derivative of this class contain additional notes of spice and wood.

Members of the family are especially popular as fragrances for men.

Many modern fougère perfumes have various citrus, herbaceous, green, floral and animalic notes included. They all tend to have a sweet/bitter and woody accord, which consists of a base accord of:

Oak moss
Coumarin (Tonka bean)
The most common modifiers to this basic accord include vetiver and geranium. Bergamot is often present to add sharpness to the lavender top-note.

I requested a sample directly from Pens by request and I had it in my hands in four days. It smells wonderful. I love the oakmoss in it. I don't really smell the lavender but it may be there.

The ingredients listed are:

Alcohol denat, Aqua (water), Parfum (fragrance), Linalool, Limonene, Coumarin, Evernia Prunastri (Oakmoss) Extract, Geraniol, Farnesol, Hydroxycitronellal, Eugenol. Citral, Cinnamal, Isoeugenol, Benzyl Benzoate, Citronellol.

As one who likes lavender (Royal Scottish, Oxford&Cambridge, T&H Shave Cream), I don't find a prominent lavender note in Sartorial. It is there, certainly, but it provides some needed balance for the sweetness. It is the persistent sweetness (I think this is the beeswax idea they are going for) that I haven't quite made peace with yet.
I like Sartorial, but haven't yet decided whether to purchase a bottle. I got two small vials from Lucky Scent, but would like to try a larger decant to give myself more time with this one.

I've actually ordered it as a sample from luckyscent, and wore it for a day. On me, Sartorial evolved into a somewhat talc-like scent with powdery florals... made me think of those pieces of chalk that tailors use!

My wife liked it too.

Also, she surprised me with a favorable comment about the Douro I tried yesterday, saying it "took her back" to the 70's.

I really like Sartorial and I get no lavender from it (at least not noticeable lavender) Mudassir on the crystal flacon is good to deal with for decants and a little cheaper than other places.

I wore Sartorial last night on a date with the LOTH and she loved it. She asked what it was so I pulled up Penhaligon's website to show her the bottle and she replied with, "Wow that bottle looks great. I guess I know what to get someone for Christmas!"

Excellent gift, I've been working through my Trumper's cologne samples and will get on to Pen's soon I hope.

I have a sample that they kindly sent me. First thing I noticed is that it's hard not to like this. It's good and very different from their other scents. It's kind of like a modern barbershop scent. All that said, I don't think I'll be buying a bottle.

I just sniffed this one the other day... it really does evoke the smell of a tailor's shop. before I even knew the background, my first thought was the image of the steam coming out of an iron.

my overall impression is like a sort of powdery floral, but that only just describes it at a basic level. I think it's actually quite an interesting creation, although as often happens, I'm not entirely sure its something I want to smell like.

The samples were shipped from Luckyscent. I should be giving my opinion soon :)

I found Sartorial in a Dept Store here in town this morning. First sniff was a little lavender (which I enjoy) and then came the warm beeswax notes. It is certainly interesting and after another test, I will probably commit to buying a bottle.

I feel the same way - I like it, but don't see myself buying a bottle.
