Penhaligon's ASB Opinions?

I'm interested in what people think of Penhaligon's after-shave balms. There isn't much in the review sections, and it looks like the last time it was brought up here in the Aftershave forum was about a year ago. There were only a couple of replies. Could we give it another go?

I've just received one of the cologne samplers in the mail, so I'm not so much interested in the fragrances as I am in performance. I'd really like to know how they stack up as an "after-shave" product - relief from any minor razor burn, moisturizing, etc.

If anybody wants to draw some comparisons, so far I have used the AOS, T&H, C&E and L'Occitane balms.

Have at it!

Hmm... I have a small tube of Opus 1870 ASB. I can give it a shot with the cream on Thursday since I haven't opened the ASB yet. I have experience with AOS and T&H to compare it to.

I wasn't overly impressed with the performance of their ASBs that I've tried. I think you'd be well served to pick up a little bit of Saint Charles Shave's ASBs or Milks if your primary concern is performance. Sue's products in that category are excellent and represent a tremendous value IMHO

Excellent! - I'd really appreciate that. Also, when you say small tube...is that a sample perhaps? If so, may I ask where you procured that from?

I have to be honest, I really think that TSD AS Milk is great too. The Blue Juniper compliments BB nicely, and I'm sure the Peppercorn would go well with the Opus. A little goes a long way and (IMO) it is less greasy than a balm.

Oh,

And it is a sample size tube of some sort, but I traded for it with another member so I have no idea where it originally came from.

Paul,

Well, from the cologne sampler I really liked the Endymion and the BB. At the moment though, I usually prefer a scented ASB to a full on cologne for day to day use. If I could get scent and performance from Pen's, that would be great. The experience that I've had with (for example) the C&E Nomad is that, although I love the scent, as an ASB I find the performance to be well below the AOS or T&H. From what you say, maybe I would be better off just using a little bit of the cologne with an unscented balm instead.

Thanks for the tip on Sue's stuff at Saint Charles though.

Nuts...well I'll keep looking then. I may try to e-mail Pen's and see if I can get a sample or two. I check the B/S/T every once in a while, but it looks like it's rare to find an 80% used product like that, just to try. I would imagine people either sell it right away or use it all themselves. You never know though...

Which scent are you looking for? I have a tube of Opus 1870 that is no longer part of my regular rotation. The scent was too strong for me. I diluted it with Nivea Sensitive ASB (in a separate container), and it worked quite nicely in its diluted form.

I highly recommend the AS milks from TSD. They have dozens of scents from which to choose, and they will do a custom blend at no extra cost. I didn't care for their rose, but their cedarwood is one of my favorites. I also ordered a custom blend of mentholated cedar, juniper and sandalwood that is very nice.

The Endymion was the one I was looking at for sure. I like the Blenheim Bouquet....I think....I still want to try that one a few more times before I would consider a purchase. I really want to like the classic Pen's fragrances but they're definitely...different, or....used in other ways now (like the baby powder scent of the Hammam - it may have been cutting edge then, but now...). The Endymion is a much more modern "design" I think, and I liked it right away. I have not yet tried the 1870, but again, it's a newer fragrance and given the description it may be right up my alley. I'm a fan of AOS sandalwood and spicy fragrances like bay rums, C&E Nomad, etc.

If you're willing to part with some or all of whatever you have left of the 1870, how is that done? PM me?

In that case, I'd find the best unscented ASB and add cologne to it because I wasn't pleased with the performance. I almost referenced my Nomad in describing the performance :lol1:
