Penhaligon Sample Vials

Just received some Penhaligons Samples in the mail. They are 1.5 ml with the top that has the stick going down (best way I know how to explain it). I got Sartorial, Opus 1870, and Blenheim Bouquet. Anyway, I was wondering if anybody had any creative ideas on how to apply it. Really want some sort of amotizer spray, so that it would be easier to apply. I've had these stick type bottles before with other samples and just kinda dab it on my finger and apply it to my neck/wrist, however I find that for some reason the scent always disappears :thumbdown. Anybody have any other ways?

Now about the samples... I did a quick teaser as soon as I pulled them out and put a little on my left wrist, one on my right, and one on my forearm. Now I can't remember which one was which. There is one in particular that I can't stop smelling, I'm pretty sure its the Sartorial, smells great.

I simply decant my sample vials into small atomizers if a fragrance intrigues me, and use the "dipstick" to apply small amounts to areas just like you did for those I am initially sampling. I am not really sure that they last for any less time this way, but when you take into account that once the initial evaporation has taken place there is not much left to scent the air. The larger surface area that is available to the atomized application yields greater return on the investment, so to speak, and therefore appears to last longer.

You have three rather distinct samples there, but all three smell quite different upon drydown from initial application, so I can understand your questioning which is which.

The Blenheim Bouquet dries down to more or less a clean pine scent, it stays very proper and dry. Arrogant, is a term that is often applied to this one, and it fits. But setting that arrogance aside, the scent will stay dry and very pine like, with a touch of pepper.

The Opus 1870 dries down to a slight incense, touch of sandalwood, bit of pepper, but a lot of cedar. This also stays fairly dry, but the cedar is very noticeable. In fact, you kinda have to pay close attention to notice the remaining elements over the cedar.

The Sartorial ends rather sweetly. Lots of sweet stuff going on, vanilla, tonka, musk, amber, a touch of cedar and sandalwood, and don't forget the overwhelming beeswax. This is not one that can be confused as being "dry" This one will be noticeably sweeter throughout it's life, and will in that regard, be distinct from the other two. The beeswax aroma will be very temperature dependent, I don't notice it much at all during colder temps, but when I heat up, or it is warmer (indoors in a heated room will do) it returns to the forefront and makes it presence known.

I hope that this helps you to narrow down the one you really like.

YMMV

If you send Penhaligon's a friendly email, they'd be willing to send you some samples. It took a while for them to get back to me, but it was free, and they included most of the ones I requested.

I sent them an email last Wednesday and I received them yesterday. It was very quick.

Sartorial is the best Penhaligon's scent of the ones I've tried. Followed by Endymion and Opus 1870 IMO. BB and Quercus have no longevity on me.... although I love the BB shave cream and aftershave balm. I just bought a 100ml bottle of Sartorial the other day. It had been on my wish list for at least 9 months. Finally pulled the trigger. It's a most unique scent.

Do I just ask for samples?

Pretty much, ask in a nice way though. Something along the lines of... I've been interested in trying a few various mens fragrances, but I would like to try them before I purchase a 100ml bottle. Is there any where that I can get samples of X,X,...

Update: found an old empty perfume bottle laying around. I had to take a dremel to to the head to get it separated from the bottle. But I got it off and cleaned it out very hard to get all the smell from the ladys perfume out and then emptied a vial into that. Works great, and is much easier to apply it.

Sounds silly, but you may also want to mention that you're a member here as have heard a lot of good things about Pen's fragrances. They know about this site and that they have a big fan base here.

I mentioned that I use Blenheim Bouquet shaving cream regularly and am interested in trying some fragrances because I love the scent of BB so much.

Penhaligons customer service has been hit and miss for me. I tried to contact them about the BB shaving cream being runny and heard nothing back. When I recently enquired about a late delivery (courier issue), they couldn't have been more helpful.

Did you send it to the UK or USA email address?

I sent it to the US email address. I got a response back the same day I sent the email asking for my mailing address and then they shipped it out the next day.

Edit: Also I wanted to say what my thoughts were on the samples.
Blenheim Bouquet - on par with what everybody says. Smells good for 15 seconds and then it vanishes like a fart in the wind (for any of you Shawshank fans out there).

Opus 1870 - I like this. Its very fresh. Kind of a sweet florally scent, but not to florally. However, I'm finding longevity and issue with this fragrance as well, its last much longer than the Blenheim though. Maybe I just need to use more.

Sartorial - Up in the air on this one. At some points I really like it and some times I find it to smell like a very boring musk. The initial spray is great, but late in the dry down I'm finding just a mediocre generic musk smell. Maybe the cold weather is affecting the full smell of the beeswax. Verdict is still out though.

Good news! Got an email back requesting my address and sample request. You may want to try again Turtle

I sent back my first email to them and got a response within a half hour.

Maybe I was just too vague last time I asked about samples (should have just said gimme gimme gimme)
